Stage It: Making Shakespeare Come Alive in Schools is the working title of a book (in progress) and its accompanying support material to stage abridged versions of four of Shakespeare's classic stories. This book, to be published by Routledge Education in December 2024, shows teachers how to help students dive into the dramatic, romantic, and playful world of Shakespeare but not in the same boring way of reading plays aloud as a class. Instead, it provides a simple-to-follow roadmap where students step into the roles, use new vocabulary, and enact characters. Students learn the basics of Shakespeare's language, themes, characters, and staging from an abridged, field-tested version of one of four of Shakespeare’s most well-known plays: Hamlet, Henry V, Julius Caesar, and Othello. Designed for busy teachers, Stage It enables teachers to choose their own adventure depending on time, grade level, and student interest. Jump into Stage It through the following options:
• One Act, one classroom: Teachers can help students stage one 6–8-minute Act from a play of their choice.
• One 6–8-minute Act with a whole grade of 4-5 teachers each doing their own Act resulting in an approximately 40-minute-long culminating presentation of the whole abridged play.
