The Arizona Senate just unanimously passed HB2281. Named in honor of Emily Pike, this bill creates a statewide Turquoise Alert to help locate missing Indigenous people. It now heads to Governor Katie Hobbs for final approval.

We know nothing can bring Emily back. But because her family asked – and because you answered – Emily’s name will now stand for protection.

Let this victory be the beginning, not the end. One state. One bill. And so much more work ahead.

Say Her Name: Emily Pike.

We are absolutely devastated and outraged by the horrific murder of 14-year-old Emily Pike, a young girl from the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Emily was reported missing on January 27, 2025, and on February 14, 2025, her dismembered remains were discovered off Highway 60 near Globe, Arizona. Yesterday, she was publicly identified.

This is not just another tragic case. This is the ongoing, relentless, and preventable crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. A 14-year-old girl should not vanish. A 14-year-old girl should not be found in pieces. A 14-year-old girl should still be here, alive, safe, and with her family.

The violence against Indigenous women and girls is systemic, it is persistent, and it is enabled by a society that continues to ignore our missing, our murdered, and our stolen sisters. We refuse to be silent. We refuse to let this be just another headline.

💔 We demand answers. We demand justice.

Every Child Matters - Community Rally in Tuba City, AZ

September 30, 2024 - Parents of youth attending Tuba City Boarding School organized a community gathering and rally outside the Navajo Police Department to demand justice and answers. On September 24, a sixth-grade male teacher was arrested at the school for public sexual indecency after evidence of him ma********ng in a classroom was collected by students. An act that had been happening for years. The perpetrator was released approximately 18 hours later, and the students’ families have not been able to receive further details of the investigation.

The timing of the incident and rally happened to line up with National Day for Truth and Reconciliation- a national holiday in Canada honoring Indigenous students who never returned home from boarding school and survivors of residential schools. The incident happened at a Bureau of Indian Education boarding school, establishing that these incidents are ongoing and not of the past.

These are their demands:

-Support from the 25th Navajo Nation Council to support a request from families to the
BIE demanding a full-scale investigation into the Tuba City Boarding School system to address the misconduct and failures in the school system and provide answers and justice for our children.
-Accountability from all identified faculty and administration personnel that knew about the abuse, failed to report it or investigate it, and allowed it to continue.
-Federal charges for the perpetrator to ensure the teacher is held responsible for the harm caused to the students, families, and greater community.
-Comprehensive solutions to protect every child to ensure their safety.
-Mental health support for all students and parents affected by this traumatic event.
-Request a joint session between the HEHSC and Law and Order committees of the Navajo Nation council to hear from the families directly, and work alongside respective Navajo Nation departments for justice.

When borders like the “US/Mexico” “Gaza/Israel” separate us from our rightful paths of travel and migration, controlling and damaging our connection to land and water.

When the “real” Natives and “real” Palestinians cut other Indigenous people down to size because they have fractured and mutilated relationships to their traditions, to their lifeways and practices.

When the police come to beat them and watch them get shipped off only to never be seen again.

Will they be incarcerated and “civilized” til they age out of some version of an Israeli foster care system and be raised by religious nationalists like I did?

Will they be victims of pe******ia and all kinds of cisheteropatriarchal abuse like I was?

Will they know their native tongues and protocols or be bullied for not like I am?

Will they lucid dream about running with their mama and daydream about her return like I do?

Their approach is clear: kill the femme and the q***r, destroy the family, conquer the land.

Survivors of like me are here to remind each other that we are each other’s other self. Stories of ancestral survival will carry us to our communities of healing and belonging. We will fight and dance, rage and laugh til all stolen relatives are avenged!

Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people experience violence, sexual assault, go missing, and are murdered at the highest rates of any ethnic group—the murder rate among Native women is ten times the national United States average.⁠

Every woman, girl, and two-spirit person deserves to feel safe in their community. Our people deserve to have their cries for help heard. Violence against Indigenous people is a crisis that has been underfunded for decades, especially when it comes to investigative resources, gathering testimony, and building data. ⁠

We must look to the systemic causes of all forms of violence against women, girls, and two-spirit people and examine the underlying social, economic, institutional, and historical causes of this crisis. As we learn about the real issues that Native people face today, we better understand the action, and we can respond with resources. People oppressed by colonization and ongoing trauma must expand capacity, power, and authority—for we are strong and resilient and worthy of support.⁠
