Seven alleged perpetrators. Seven hours. Not one person stopping it.
We could call these seven men monsters, separate them from the rest of society, and move on.
But I think that misses a much bigger conversation.
Sexual violence doesn’t happen in a vacuum.
According to the lawsuit, messages about what was allegedly happening were sent to a fraternity group chat called “Chi Phi Actives.” The fraternity reportedly had 57 active members at the time.
And that matters.
Because there is an entire circle around sexual violence that we don’t talk about enough.
The person who laughs.
The person who hears something and stays quiet.
The friend who protects his friend because “he’s a good guy.”
The institution that fails the person brave enough to come forward.
The people who immediately start asking what she drank, what she took, why she was there, or what she could have done differently—before asking about the behavior of the men around her.
That is how sexual violence gets minimized, excused and ignored. It’s time we start to educate people what to do when r@pe is discussed. There is clearly a lack of knowledge on what to do when it’s being talked about and the first step is reporting it. The first step is stopping the r@pe culture.
