A warm and joyful gathering at AAS 2026 in Vancouver

Grateful to Prof. Pei-yin Lin for hosting this IJTS-sponsored social, which brought together Taiwan Studies scholars and friends for a relaxed evening of conversation and reconnection.

Beyond the conference panels, these moments of sharing — across institutions, generations, and places — are what truly sustain our scholarly community.

A great moment at AAS 2026 in Vancouver.

The panel, “An Unlikely Trajectory: Taiwan’s Leftism as Literary Practice and Historical Memory,” brought together an inspiring group of colleagues — including IJTS board members (Yvonne Sung-sheng Chang and Pei-yin Lin) and authors (McConaghy and Po-shi Chen) — for a rich and engaging discussion.

Lovely to have Yvonne joining the panel online, alongside participants in the room. Thanks to Lu Xun specialist Prof Jon von Kowallis of UNSW to be the panel chair. Always a pleasure to see how our IJTS community continues to connect across spaces, disciplines, institutions, and continents.

Sharing this moving tribute to Professor Murray Rubinstein, a pioneering scholar of Taiwan studies whose intellectual generosity and mentorship shaped generations of students and researchers. The piece, written by Professor Niki J.P. Alsford, reflects on his enduring legacy as both a formidable thinker and a deeply supportive mentor who fostered conversations, encouraged new lines of inquiry, and helped build a global community of Taiwan scholars. A tribute to Professor Murray Rubenstein by Gary D. Rawnsley:

Very sad to learn that Prof Murray Rubenstein, a towering scholar in Taiwan studies, has passed away. I first met him when we were both board members of the American Association of Chinese Studies in the late 1990s/early 2000s & greatly admired his book The Other Taiwan. Last saw him at the World Congress of Taiwan Studies at SOAS in 2015 where he delivered the keynote. A very gentle, lovely, and generous man with a formidable intellect. RIP

Our Editorial Board just wrapped up its annual meeting, and we’re excited to share some highlights! 📚✨

This year, the journal saw strong performance, more submissions than ever, and remarkable growth in readership across the globe.

We also had great discussions about how to keep raising the bar—maintaining high quality while submissions increase, strengthening our visibility, and building deeper connections with scholars around the world.

Board members shared fantastic ideas for future outreach, including “Meet the Editor” sessions, participation in conference panels, book exhibit events, and expanded engagement across disciplines.

Looking ahead, we’re beginning early plans for the journal’s 10th anniversary in 2028—stay tuned for more! 🎉

Plenty of concrete next steps came out of the meeting, especially around outreach, distribution, and partnership opportunities. Lots to look forward to!
