As part of the senior seminar "Thing Theory in Practice," 14 Global Liberal Studies students spent the semester studying material culture and uncovering the role of "things" when it comes to understanding cultures past and present and the concepts of possessions and agency. Their studies culminated in a student-led exhibition titled "Evocative Objects" and housed at NYU Special Collections on the second floor of Bobst Library.

To create the exhibit, students visited NYU Special Collections NYU Libraries, The Morgan Library & Museum's Thaw Conservation Center, NYPL The New York Public Library's Berg Collection, Bard Graduate Center's "Sightlines" exhibition, and NY. These hands-on experiences taught these students—several of whom are are interested in pursuing future work in museums and archiving—about the challenges of preservation, the complexities of displaying sensitive materials, the effect placement has on meaning, and the many forms of value that objects may hold.
This exhibit is on display on the second floor of Bobst until January 19, 2024. Those who visit will also receive postcards that feature the exhibition objects.

Senior Spotlights: Looking Back with the Class of 2023

We are officially one day away from the GLS Baccalaureate Ceremony! Last but not least, we are highlighting Guinevere Pandolfi, a Global Liberal Studies senior concentrating in Sustainability, Health, and the Environment. Originally from Chicago, IL, Guinevere is preparing for graduation after the completion of her senior thesis entitled “Uncovering the Origins of Endangered Western South Atlantic Foraging Green Turtles.” She shared her reflections on her time in GLS and NYU.

What is something you have learned during your time at Liberal Studies and in GLS?
I learned how important it is to have a strong academic community. I have made so many meaningful connections with the students, faculty, and staff in Liberal Studies, and I am so thankful for all of the opportunities I have had throughout my four years.

What are you looking forward to in the future?
I am excited by the prospect of delving deeper into my field of science and pushing my limits by pursuing graduate school in the near future. I hope to conduct research that can make a positive impact on the world.

How has Liberal Studies and GLS contributed to your growth?
Global Liberal Studies allowed me to apply my knowledge of ecology and helped me develop a comprehensive understanding of environmental issues through the interdisciplinary nature of the program. I was exposed to diverse perspectives and critical approaches that allowed me to analyze environmental challenges from various angles and consider all aspects of the areas impacted.

What is your favorite memory of your time at NYU, in Liberal Studies, or in GLS?
I had the wonderful opportunity to spend my first year on the NYU Paris campus. One of my favorite memories from that time was during Thanksgiving when many of us stayed in Paris. NYU organized a "Thanksgiving Dinner" on a boat, which allowed us to celebrate the holiday together in a unique and fun way.

Give a shoutout to GLS people who have made an impact:
I want to thank Professor Genia Naro-Maciel, Professor Erin Morrison, Professor Kevin Bonney, and Professor Robin Nagle for helping and supporting me during my time in GLS.

Senior Spotlights: Looking Back with the Class of 2023

Jordan Alexander Hubbard is a Global Liberal Studies senior concentrating in Cultural and Social Identities. Originally from Aurora, CO, Jordan recently completed his senior thesis entitled “In Defense of S*x: Cruising as Defiance.” He shares his reflections on his experience in GLS and at NYU.

What is something you have learned during your time at Liberal Studies and in GLS?
To believe in myself and my ability to overcome.

What are you looking forward to in the future?
Law School. I've always dreamed of becoming a lawyer, dedicated to helping others through their most difficult moments. Essentially, public service!

How has Liberal Studies and GLS contributed to your growth?
LS and GLS equipped me with the intellectual capabilities to go out and make a meaningful impact on the world. With the incredible people I've met here, who challenged and encouraged me, I've come to find myself and understand my passions.

What is your favorite memory of your time at NYU, in Liberal Studies, or in GLS?
As Dean’s Circle scholars, we had the incredible privilege of visiting Abu Dhabi and Dubai; which also happened to coincide with my 21st birthday! So, celebrating my 21st birthday in Abu Dhabi.

Give a shoutout to GLS people who have made an impact:
I could not have made it through NYU without my incredible academic advisor, Stephanie Santiago. She is literally an angel and the best! I must also thank Dean Mostov, Dean White, Lynn Higinbotham, and Dean Rodriguez for their continued support and commitment to me and our student body. I must also thank the outstanding professors and mentors I've had the privilege of working with over the years.

Senior Spotlights: Looking Back with the Class of 2023

Ryan Carney is a Global Liberal Studies senior from Vienna, VA concentrating in Sustainability, Health, and the Environment. After the completion of his senior thesis, “Ecofascism in the United States Political Discourse: Applications to the Southern Border,” Ryan is getting ready to graduate with his GLS peers in just a few days and pursuing a Master of Public Administration in Health Policy and Management from Wagner in the fall. He shared his thoughts on his experience at GLS and NYU with the Liberal Studies team.

What is something you have learned during your time at Liberal Studies and in GLS?
Being in GLS allowed me to strengthen my student government work by incorporating the global experience. NYU is a campus without borders, however, sometimes, we focus solely on the Washington Square Park campus. GLS taught me the importance of considering all perspectives from every angle, and studying abroad enhanced that because as I traveled to different countries and talked to the locals, I learned about their own experiences and circumstances, which provided me with new insights. The classes I took in my first year laid the foundation for what I am doing in the future. Through the Experiential Learning Seminar, I was an intern for an environmental law firm for an entire semester, and LS led me to exactly what I want to do as a career.

What are you looking forward to in the future?
Environmental policy has always been a passion of mine, and the ability to work for the Environmental Protection Agency this summer is a dream. Additionally, next year, I will be the Student Body President of NYU, representing 61,000 students, and I look forward to bringing a more global and graduate student perspective to this role to improve the student experience at NYU.

How has Liberal Studies and GLS contributed to your growth?
Serving as an LS Service Ambassador has been one of the most gratifying experiences during my time at NYU. Throughout the year-long service, I worked with NYU Langone Health’s Energy & Sustainability team. The whole program helped me grow as a leader. The ambassadors and I participated in the pilot Green Zone training from the Office of Sustainability and provided feedback on improving the module. In late January, I was an NYU Reads facilitator for the incoming LS spring admit students to discuss Exit West. After we finished discussing the book, my group was small enough that we discussed their fears and their hopes for the upcoming year. Additionally, we created LSSA De-Stress Tips for Students, especially useful during final exams. My proudest moment as an LS Ambassador was the implementation of the Liberal Studies Food Pantry. It started with us wanting to address food insecurity at NYU, consulting with Jonathan Chin, founder of Shared Meals, about the idea, applying for a Green Grant, cleaning and organizing the closet for the pantry, and finally opening the pantry. More than 1,000 items have been distributed to students with this initiative.

What is your favorite memory of your time at NYU, in Liberal Studies, or in GLS?
My favorite memory has to be from NYU Madrid, traveling with some of my closest friends, going to an FC Barcelona game, an unexpected cheese and beer festival, missing the train back to Madrid, running through a herd of sheep in Casa de Campo, stargazing in Tenerife, Canary Islands (the tallest point in Spain), and traveling to 14 countries across Europe. Also, in my first year, I lived on the Big Apple Big Screen, and we always had weekly movie nights.

Give a shoutout to GLS people who have made an impact:
I want to shout out a few individuals who have made an impact in no particular order: John, Finn, Prince, Rishi, Dylan, and Sneha. Also, all my professors throughout my four years especially deserve a shoutout.

Senior Spotlights: Looking Back with the Class of 2023
As we begin the countdown to graduation, we’d like to share the reflections of Cervelle Vidal, a Global Liberal Studies senior concentrating in Critical Creative Production. From Queens, NY, Cervelle is preparing to graduate after completing her senior thesis entitled “define friends.”

What is something you have learned during your time at Liberal Studies and in GLS?
Initially coming into NYU, I had a deep sense of impostor syndrome and felt very out of place; however, throughout my time in GLS, I grew more as a person and recognized my abilities. I became more introspective and more capable of advocating for myself. I would put myself in a box at times, but slowly I worked to bring myself to step out further of my comfort zone, even if it might result in “failure”.
What are you looking forward to in the future?
In the future, I’m looking forward to developing my skills further to see what paths it will lead me to. GLS allowed me to tap more into my creative side, which I’m very excited to continue pushing myself further to see just how far I can go. I would love to pursue further studies in art and storytelling that I can be proud of. One of my main goals is to make a lasting, positive impact in someone’s life. By starting small, hopefully a ripple effect can occur to create peace, joy and equity for all.
How has Liberal Studies and GLS contributed to your growth?
Apart from my academic life, GLS contributed to my all-around growth. I definitely wasn’t the same person I was when I first entered university, and I can gladly say that I’m happy with who I’m becoming. I have developed a focus on what I value, along with broadening my scope on how I perceive the world around me. I’m grateful to have been exposed to all sorts of environments to help me broaden my horizons.
What is your favorite memory of your time at NYU, in Liberal Studies, or in GLS?
It’s hard to pick only one memory, but I can remember my favorite times were the moments when I could hang out with my friends. The times going to a friends’ room in Paris to have dinner, sitting in Washington Square Park eating on the grass, joining breakout rooms on Zoom and even singing in Bobst instead of studying all are admirable. I can stay with the people I’ve met and the experiences are so valuable to me and helped me become who I am. I’m excited to see the next steps in all aspects of growing into my own person!
Give a shoutout to GLS people who have made an impact:
To the GLS folks that were (and still are) absolutely amazing: Natalie, Melanie and Moises (My first friends that I met at an LS Commuter Social, you all made the transition process from high school to college so smooth and made me feel comfortable!); Karolina (I don’t think I’ll ever forget the Belgian waffles, that interesting FlixBus journey, the La Défense jokes, and all of our study abroad moments are unforgettable!); Campfire: Sandra, Angelica, Hayley, Jeylan, Ferran, Victoria, Prof Jessamyn (Thank you all so much for giving me more confidence in my thesis and encouraging me when I felt completely lost!); Irene and the Liberal Studies Student Leader Team (the support and care you all have for each other made it so much easier to open up and get more involved in the LS community); Dean Jonathon White (I don’t even think I would be graduating if it weren’t for you! Thank you so much for guiding and supporting me with my academic journey, all your NYU knowledge was so impactful in helping me figure out what I should do next) – I appreciate you all so much ❤ and to everyone else, you are also amazing too! 🙂
