Senior Spotlights: Looking Back with the Class of 2023
Ryan Carney is a Global Liberal Studies senior from Vienna, VA concentrating in Sustainability, Health, and the Environment. After the completion of his senior thesis, “Ecofascism in the United States Political Discourse: Applications to the Southern Border,” Ryan is getting ready to graduate with his GLS peers in just a few days and pursuing a Master of Public Administration in Health Policy and Management from Wagner in the fall. He shared his thoughts on his experience at GLS and NYU with the Liberal Studies team.
What is something you have learned during your time at Liberal Studies and in GLS?
Being in GLS allowed me to strengthen my student government work by incorporating the global experience. NYU is a campus without borders, however, sometimes, we focus solely on the Washington Square Park campus. GLS taught me the importance of considering all perspectives from every angle, and studying abroad enhanced that because as I traveled to different countries and talked to the locals, I learned about their own experiences and circumstances, which provided me with new insights. The classes I took in my first year laid the foundation for what I am doing in the future. Through the Experiential Learning Seminar, I was an intern for an environmental law firm for an entire semester, and LS led me to exactly what I want to do as a career.
What are you looking forward to in the future?
Environmental policy has always been a passion of mine, and the ability to work for the Environmental Protection Agency this summer is a dream. Additionally, next year, I will be the Student Body President of NYU, representing 61,000 students, and I look forward to bringing a more global and graduate student perspective to this role to improve the student experience at NYU.
How has Liberal Studies and GLS contributed to your growth?
Serving as an LS Service Ambassador has been one of the most gratifying experiences during my time at NYU. Throughout the year-long service, I worked with NYU Langone Health’s Energy & Sustainability team. The whole program helped me grow as a leader. The ambassadors and I participated in the pilot Green Zone training from the Office of Sustainability and provided feedback on improving the module. In late January, I was an NYU Reads facilitator for the incoming LS spring admit students to discuss Exit West. After we finished discussing the book, my group was small enough that we discussed their fears and their hopes for the upcoming year. Additionally, we created LSSA De-Stress Tips for Students, especially useful during final exams. My proudest moment as an LS Ambassador was the implementation of the Liberal Studies Food Pantry. It started with us wanting to address food insecurity at NYU, consulting with Jonathan Chin, founder of Shared Meals, about the idea, applying for a Green Grant, cleaning and organizing the closet for the pantry, and finally opening the pantry. More than 1,000 items have been distributed to students with this initiative.
What is your favorite memory of your time at NYU, in Liberal Studies, or in GLS?
My favorite memory has to be from NYU Madrid, traveling with some of my closest friends, going to an FC Barcelona game, an unexpected cheese and beer festival, missing the train back to Madrid, running through a herd of sheep in Casa de Campo, stargazing in Tenerife, Canary Islands (the tallest point in Spain), and traveling to 14 countries across Europe. Also, in my first year, I lived on the Big Apple Big Screen, and we always had weekly movie nights.
Give a shoutout to GLS people who have made an impact:
I want to shout out a few individuals who have made an impact in no particular order: John, Finn, Prince, Rishi, Dylan, and Sneha. Also, all my professors throughout my four years especially deserve a shoutout.
