Last Wednesday, Lehman College gathered to celebrate the historic grand opening of The Lehman Grand, the College’s first student dormitory, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new dorm provides much-needed student housing with apartment-style living for more than 180 residents in the newly renovated, landmarked Dollar Savings Bank on the Grand Concourse at Fordham Road.

Congratulations to Associate Professor LaRose Parris (Africana Studies) on the release of her new book, “Black Thought Matters: Africana Philosophy and Freedom.” 📚

The book illuminates the often-overlooked contributions of Black and Africana thinkers to the development of philosophical thought.

“Instead of focusing solely on how Africana thinkers' existentialist writings predate those of European thinkers, ‘Black Thought Matters’ explores Africana thought’s broader impact on the history of global ideas, the social sciences, literature, political theory and, of course, philosophy,” Parris said. A trip to a career fair on campus opened the door to internships at three of the “Big Five” publishing houses for Angelica Veloz. During her sophomore year, she landed the role of publicity intern at Hachette Book Group 's imprint, Algonquin Books —the first step in her journey through the publishing industry. The following year, Angelica worked as a marketing intern at Farrar, Straus and Giroux, an imprint of
Macmillan Publishers, and, most recently, completed an eight-week publicity internship at Simon & Schuster's Atria Books.

“Internships are valuable learning opportunities, and building these meaningful connections is essential,” she said. “Through these experiences, I confirmed my desire to pursue a career in publishing, particularly in publicity and marketing, while also gaining hands-on, practical skills that will support my future career.”
