31 Atlas, more specifically known as 3I/ATLAS, is an interstellar comet that has gained significant scientific attention. It was discovered on July 1, 2025, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope. This comet is unique because it originates from outside our Solar System, making it only the third confirmed interstellar object observed passing through our celestial neighborhood after 1I/ĘťOumuamua and 2I/Borisov.
3I/ATLAS is remarkable due to its size and age. Scientists estimate it to be about 7.5 billion years old, predating the formation of the Earth and the Sun. It has been traveling alone through interstellar space, carrying ancient cosmic material, essentially serving as a time capsule from the early universe. Its trajectory and velocity, moving at about 58 km/s on a hyperbolic orbit, confirm its interstellar origin.
The comet is composed of a solid icy nucleus surrounded by a comaâa cloud of gas and dust released as the comet approaches the Sun and its ice sublimates. Observations reveal it contains unusual amounts of carbon dioxide and traces of water ice, water v***r, carbon monoxide, and other compounds akin to those found in comets from our Solar System.
In recent months, 3I/ATLAS has drawn attention for its strange behavior, including non-gravitational acceleration and a shifting tail, prompting some scientists to speculate about its nature. While NASA and other scientific bodies assert it poses no threat to Earth, some have proposed it could be a technological artifact or probe of alien origin, although these ideas remain speculative.
