🎞️ Upcoming screening dates for "A Litany for Survival: The Life and Work of Audre Lorde" in Brooklyn, Norfolk, and Online

This 1995 documentary, made by Ada Gay Griffin and Michelle Parkerson, draws on archival footage, interviews, and readings of Lorde’s poetry to chronicle a life that bridged movements and demanded that none of them leave anyone behind.

"True North" is a bold documentary that illuminates Montréal's place in the global struggle for Black liberation. Weaving together never-before-seen archives and firsthand testimonies, the film follows the students, writers, and activists who shaped the Black Power movement of the 1960s.

Directed by Emmy Award–winning Haitian-Panamanian filmmaker Michèle Stephenson.

The Christine Choy Retrospective will launch with two newly preserved films, "From Spikes to Spindles," preserved by BB Optics, Inc. with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) and the New York Women in Film & Television's Women's Film Preservation Fund (WFPF) and "Mississippi Triangle," preserved by BB Optics, Inc with support from NFPF. Third World Newsreel’s archiving and preservation projects receive partial support from the New York State Council on the Arts’ Small Capital Improvement Grant for Arts and Culture. Lunette Films is co-presenting this retrospective with Third World Newsreel

🎉 DOC NYC Honors JT Takagi with Lifetime Achievement Award

DOC NYC's annual Visionaries Tribute will be held on November 11 at Gotham Hall in Manhattan, where filmmaker-sound recordist JT Takagi will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Takagi is Executive Director of Third World Newsreel, a progressive alternative media center, and teaches at The New School and City University of NY. Her filmmaking credits include Bittersweet Survival; Homes Apart: Korea; The Women Outside; and North Korea: Beyond the DMZ. As a sound engineer, she has recorded numerous public television and theatrical documentaries that have earned Emmy and Cinema Audio Society awards, including Yance Ford’s Strong Island and Stanley Nelson’s Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution.

“The Visionaries Tribute is an annual reminder of the breadth and depth of talent in our field,” commented DOC NYC co-founder and Director of Special Projects Thom Powers, who oversees the Visionaries event. “This year’s honoree exemplifies a spirit of truth-telling against the odds. JT Takagi has a remarkable career as both a sound recordist and leader of Third World Newsreel."

Join Interference Archive and Third World Newsreel on Sat, Aug 15th at 7 PM for a showcase of TWN documentaries highlighting the work of 1970s NYC community members and organizations, including El Comité MINP and the Young Lords. The work of these movements illustrates collective power creating housing, social services, and healthcare beyond the state.

This event is part of Interference Archive's current exhibit "¡AN UNBREAKABLE HUMAN THREAD! Movements & People for a Sovereign Borikén".

Congratulations to Juan Carlos Dávila Santiago for his film “Zenon and the Rebel Boats,” now the 2026 BlackStar Film Festival’s Feature Documentary Award winner.

Born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Juan C. Dávila is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, news producer, and activist. His documentary "Zenon and the Rebel Boats" is about the life of Vieques (Puerto Rico) fisherman and revolutionary Carlos “Taso” Zenón. For decades, Taso fought against the military occupation of his native land, fighting the U.S. Navy both on land and sea – it was the fisherman’s slingshot against the military’s cannons.

Join us for a seminar for the Educational Video Center's (EVC) Summer Youth Documentary Premiere this Thursday.

The heart of EVC is our young people and the living archive of award-winning films they have produced since 1984. Their incomparable archive of youth-produced documentaries lifts up the stories, perspectives, challenges, and hopes of New York City’s young people and documents systemic inequities over many decades by those most affected and least represented. EVC shares these powerful stories with the world, inspiring action and critical conversations about who makes history, and whose stories deserve to be told.
