From successful catering side hustle to brick-and-mortar location, entrepreneur and owner of Greenwich Village burger joint Stash Burger, Thiy Alsaidi (BBA ’26), kicked off his business just weeks before graduation and wants to help others do the same.

Stash Burger, a fast-food spot serving smash burgers, deep-fried hot dogs, shakes, and more, started as a catering service for student events at Baruch, where Alsaidi found that leveraging his connections with friends in the food business was faster and more cost-efficient than contracting external vendors and going through standard reimbursement processes for Baruch clubs.

Alsaidi shared that his immigrant heritage, family, and Brooklyn entrepreneurial energy inspired him to take a leap of faith and sign a lease on a turnkey restaurant in a prime Manhattan neighborhood.

“Growing up in our community inspires us to get into entrepreneurship,” Alsaidi said. “Our fathers all wanted to have their own businesses—to do something tangible, get their hands dirty. For a lot of immigrants, a small business is a foothold here because even if they can’t speak English very well, they can run a business.”

Amazon Web Services (AWS) teamed up with Baruch College to host an AWS Jam, an interactive, team-based learning experience allowing students to compete in simulated real-world operational and technical challenges spanning over 20 different AWS cloud services and 12 different topics.

Teams solved complex, hands-on problems across critical domains including cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data and analytics while gaining exposure to AWS technologies and industry best practices. Congratulations to challenge winners Steven Tsvik, Marina Martin, Mie Chen Wu Wu, and Khazratjon Amonov (left to right) for completing all the challenges in the shortest amount of time.

Student participants were able to attend due to Baruch’s Tech Talent Pipeline Residency, a program funded by NYC Small Business Services in partnership with CUNY and leading NYC tech employers to prepare computer information systems majors for high-impact tech careers.

A team of Zicklin Executive MBA in Healthcare Administration (EMBA HCA) students is helping healthcare practitioners make more informed decisions about providing inclusive care for some of the nation’s most vulnerable diabetes patients through an AI-informed study. 📖

With an estimated 40 million people in the U.S. living with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes, readmission costs have long been a challenge for hospitals. The student team focused its research on developing a model to predict which patients were most at risk of readmission within 30 days of discharge, based on factors such as hospital stay history, missing blood sugar tests, medication, and more. The result was a tailored approach, in which the highest-risk patients received the most follow-up care. Their findings were published in Health Management, Policy and Innovation, an open-access journal for healthcare practitioners.

For Associate Professor Dr. Tolga Aydinliyim, the publication was not only an accomplishment for the students but also an acknowledgment that their research could help change the healthcare industry. “I told the students they should consider pitching this project to the healthcare systems where they’re based, as a simple, cost-effective intervention that can benefit both patients and hospitals,” Dr. Aydinliyim said.

For Jonathan Alvarez (MPA '25), earning a graduate degree from the Marxe School was one milestone in a longer journey of personal growth, leadership, and community impact. 🤝

After a nearly 13-year sentence, Alvarez left the criminal justice system determined to build a new life that can help others. Now, as founder and CEO of 914United, a nonprofit working to break cycles of justice involvement for at-risk youth and adults, Alvarez leads work focused on youth development, violence prevention, reentry, workforce readiness, and leadership development. 🎤

Since graduating from Baruch, Alvarez has been named a 2025 40 Under 40 Rising Star by The Business Council of Westchester, a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Leadership Network Fellow, and has joined Monroe University as an adjunct professor. 🎓

“I believe every person deserves the opportunity to rewrite their story—and every community deserves leaders willing to help make that possible,” Alvarez said. “My work is grounded in a simple belief: people should not be defined by their worst mistake, but by their capacity to grow, lead, and contribute.” 💬

With over 35,000 bikes across NYC, Citi Bike is becoming a staple of the city's blueprint, but not without its challenges. At Baruch College, undergraduates are tackling the real-world business challenges facing Citi Bike, applying data analytics and IT skills to improve bike availability and make fares more accessible for New Yorkers. 🚲

“It was great hearing [the students'] presentation since the department is seeking to provide more opportunities for riders to utilize Citi Bike services,” said NYC DOT's Sujin Lee, Director of Data Science, Bike Share and shared mobility. “Ridership behavior is so different based on every borough, and we are looking at the system citywide to develop something new.” 💬

The project was part of Baruch’s Tech Talent Pipeline Residency (TTPR), a program funded by the NYC Small Business Services designed in partnership with NYC’s leading tech employers and The City University of New York to give computer information systems (CIS) majors a pathway to careers in technology. 🔍

At the intersection of technology and society, student researchers are addressing some of the most urgent questions surrounding artificial intelligence through the College’s Policy, Ethics, Law, Technology, and AI (PELTA) Initiative. 🏙️

The inaugural campus-wide competition invited students to examine emerging challenges in AI governance and innovation through policy-focused essays and original creative media. From misinformation and AI accountability to artificial emotion and resource scarcity, six students received the top award for their research in the 2026 competition. 🏆

For one winner, Dylan Torres (BBA, Finance ’29), the competition offered an opportunity to advocate for an issue he believes is too often overlooked. 🔍

“I wanted to bring attention to the environmental impact of AI as it begins to gain momentum, and I wish that by publishing this article more people will be aware of the dangers associated with our everyday choices,” Dylan Torres explained. “More importantly, I hope my writing will inspire a greener community at Baruch and within our city.” 💬
