Max Stossel ‘07, an award-winning poet, filmmaker, and speaker, raised thought-provoking questions about the impact of social media and technology on our emotional well-being, relationships, and learning during a HS assembly last week.

With a compelling mix of data, humor, and stories, Max encouraged us to rethink how we use these tools and to prioritize what brings us joy and true connection.

It was a super engaging, timely, and impactful presentation!

Director of Alumni Relations Nicholas Lechich ’06 delivered brief remarks, expressing gratitude and underscoring the importance of gathering and (re)connection, and introduced Arun Yang ’06 and Maxie Glass Harnik ’05 as the new President and Vice President of the Alumni Council, respectively. Arun then added his thanks and spoke about his reflections and priorities as a steward of Dalton and his excitement about our collective philanthropic progress.

The Dalton Alumni Office and Alumni Council Connects Committee hosted an event at the alumni-owned gallery, Friday Arts, on Monday. Laura Kleger ’94 and her husband, Justin Schwarz, founded this gallery to showcase contemporary works in a way that feels personal and meaningful.

The program included an in-depth tour of the exhibition Vernal. It opened with short films Justin made about two of the featured artists and transitioned to a discussion about the concept of the exhibition, i.e., “return[ing] to the natural world as a site where memory, meaning, and material change converge,” and how each piece connects to it.

We are so grateful to Laura and Justin for their hospitality. The gallery proved to be an ideal refuge from the pouring rain! Thanks to all who braved the elements to enjoy this special evening.

Fred Katz ‘08, Senior NBA Writer for The Athletic, and Andrew Beaton, sports reporter for The Wall Street Journal, visited Dr. Christine Leja’s Introduction to Journalism class this week to share strategies, insights, and anecdotes, and to answer questions from the students. Fred and Andrew emphasized the importance of building relationships, storytelling, accuracy, and allowing curiosity to drive the work. It was super informative and engaging!

We are grateful to Kwame Brathwaite Jr., Class of 1992, who returned to Dalton recently to present in a HS assembly about the importance of preserving his father’s iconic photography — which was deeply rooted in music, fashion, and activism — and his commitment to telling his father’s story. The program was a celebration of Black History Month that the student heads of the Black Student Union helped to coordinate. It opened with a musical performance and closed with a Q&A.

Kwame shared personal anecdotes, along with a clip from a recent documentary, “Black is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story,” highlighting his father’s work and the celebrities who have curated and championed his art over the years. Kwame explained that artists continue to be inspired by Brathwaite’s photography, and exhibits around the world help keep his work in the conversation and considered through a contemporary lens.

Looking out at the audience, Kwame commented that being back at Dalton in the Martin Theater was “really a full circle moment,” and it was exciting to be part of it!

We did it! Thanks to your enthusiasm, partnership, and generosity, we surpassed our Alumni Giving Day goal, reaching 528 donors total (and counting) with participation from 65 different classes.

Unsurprisingly, it was a spirited race, with several leaderboard shifts in the final hours.

Here are the final standings:

1st Place: Class of 1994 with 57 (!) donors
2nd Place: Class of 1978
3rd Place: Class of 2006
4th Place: Class of 2007
5th Place (Tie): Class of 1992 & Class of 2005

Thanks again for your responsiveness and dedication. A special shout-out to the alumni who offered challenges that added to our dollar count. This was a total team effort — and it was inspiring to witness so many of you getting involved with texts, emails, posts, and gifts of your own. We are also thrilled that you were able to reconnect in the process!

All Alumni Giving Day proceeds go to Dalton’s Annual Fund, which help teachers provide current and future Daltonians with an extraordinary learning experience.

As we get closer to our Alumni Giving Day goal, we are reflecting on the special aspects of the Dalton experience that the Annual Fund helps to support. Here are a few examples from current students.

The countdown continues! Link to donate in bio.
