Monte Sur learning space grew out of a need that working families faced in the South Bronx, specifically when looking for a play-based, Spanish immersion, affordable and quality education or more than just a full-time day care option for children ages 1.5 to 3 years. “Black history must break out of the confinements of Black History month and be fully integrated into literature, art, science, music, history, and other disciplines.”

In a joint statement with MPPI, AMS, AMI/USA, IMC, MACTE, MEPI, NCMPS, and MSJ we, the Montessori leadership organizations in the United States of America, are responding to the recent actions of the leadership of the Maria Montessori Academy in North Ogden, Utah, which allowed parents to make the decision regarding their children’s participation in Black History month activities, as well as the entitlement of the parents who demanded such an option be given.

How else can we explain students’ universal recognition of Columbus and almost total ignorance of the name Taíno? As we work to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day in our communities and schools, let’s work to remember the people who were here first. Their lives mattered 500 years ago, and they matter today.”

Whose History Matters? Students Can Name Columbus, But Most Have Never Heard of the Taíno People - Zinn Education Project By Bill Bigelow This erasure of huge swaths of humanity is a fundamental feature of the school curriculum, but also of the broader mainstream political discourse.
