CCNY welcomes the gift to the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (DSI), based on campus, of nearly 500 rare historical artifacts, including the first modern map of the Dominican Republic and a rare 1528 Map of La Española. Joseph A. Gonzalez and Ralph E. Magnus are the collectors and donors of these materials. "In this collection, curated with exceptional care and historical insight, La Española emerges as a space of firsts, where a New World fashioned by the Old World took shape,’” stated CUNY DSI Director Ramona HernĂĄndez at yesterday's announcement. Held by the Foundation for City College, the collection is characterized by HernĂĄndez as "priceless to Caribbean historiography, particularly to the island that served as the gateway through which both Europe’s and Africa's institutions, peoples, and ideas first entered the Americas."
