There is a Groundhog Day in the USA, while in the Czech Republic, there is Hromnice (Candlemas.)
Where did the name come from? It was believed that candles consecrated in the church could protect a house from thunder (hrom.) The candles, therefore, began to be called Hromničky and the holiday Hromnice.
A Czech proverb says: “Na Hromnice o hodinu více.” It translates as “One more hour on Candlemas” and refers to the fact that on this day, we can already enjoy one more hour of daylight since the winter solstice.

On January 22nd, two unfortunate and troubling events happened in the history of Czechoslovakia. Let's hope they will never repeat, never succeed!

1933 - Supporters of the National Fascist Community attempted a fascist coup near Brno-Židenice

1947 - Meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in Prague, where Klement Gottwald spoke with the goal "to gain a support of a majority of the nation" for Communist Party policy.

"Barborky" is an old folk (originally pagan) custom. On the day of St. Barbora on December 4, 20 days before Christmas Day, we cut twigs of cherry trees and put them in a vase with water. They will bloom just in time for Christmas.
The blooming Barborky at Christmas symbolize not only the arrival of a new light in the form of Jesus Christ but also the winter solstice, which ultimately means the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

"Máme holé ruce"

International Students' Day is held annually on the 17 of November. It was initially commemorating the Czech universities, which N***s stormed in 1939, and the students who were subsequently killed and sent to concentration camps.

In 1989 independent student leaders organized a mass demonstration to commemorate International Students' Day. The students used this 50th-anniversary event to express their dissatisfaction with the ruling Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. By nightfall, what had begun as a peaceful commemorative event turned violent, with many participants brutally beaten by riot police, red berets, and other members of law enforcement agencies.

The events linked to the International Students' Day of the 17 of November 1989 helped spark the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia. Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day is today observed as an official holiday in the Czech Republic.
