What actually IS music theory? 🤔

When your child looks at a piece of sheet music, their eyes take in the symbols and the brain gets to work, using music theory to make sense of what it sees.

That understanding turns notes and signs into meaning, and the brain sends directions to the hands and fingers, guiding them on which keys to play, when, and for how long.

Meanwhile, the ears check the sound and the brain adjusts. Without theory, the page is just marks. With theory, It’s a message the brain understands and the fingers bring to life.

That’s why theory is an anchor, not an extra.

🎹 Keyboard ABCs — ages 5–6 | Fridays 3:30–4:15pm
🎹 Cool Keyboards — ages 7–13 | Fridays 4:30–5:30pm

Sessions run September 18 – October 23, with a second session November 6 – December 18.

We hear this a lot, and here's the good news: you don't need to know how to play to support your child's practice at home.

What actually helps:
✔️ Give them quiet, focused time; not rushed, not squeezed between everything else
✔️ Celebrate small wins (“You nailed that quarter note today!”)
✔️ Don't stress about being the expert; that's what I’m here for

Every child walks into their first piano lesson a little differently. Some come in ready to dive right in. Others are shy, a little nervous, or need extra time and patience to feel comfortable at the keys, and that includes children with ADHD or who are neurodivergent.

Parents should know there is no “right” way to start. I meet your child exactly where they are, adjust my approach to how they learn best, and build confidence one small win at a time.

If your child needs a little more patience, a little more encouragement, or a little more time, that is not a barrier to music. That is simply where their journey begins.
