On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honor the memories of the ordinary people who performed extraordinary acts during World War II.
Amid the horrors of the Holocaust, the people of Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Bulgaria stand out as heroes.
In each of these countries, ordinary people performed extraordinary acts of bravery at great personal risk to rescue thousands of their Jewish countrymen, such as Danish rescuers who helped Jews escape to Sweden via boat.

We’re excited to spotlight Thanks To Scandinavia Alumna Linnéa Gad.
Linnéa, a visual artist from Stockholm, was one of our scholars in 2021-22 as part of her Master in Fine Arts studies at Columbia School of the Arts. Today she is an accomplished artist whose work has been exhibited across the world, including at The Jewish Museum in New York, Ceysson Bénétière in New York, and Beau Travail in Stockholm. Her pieces use materials like cardboard, metal, bark, and porcelain to explore an interconnected ecosystem.
Linnéa’s exhibition Breath is Everywhere is currently being displayed at the Liu Shiming Art Foundation in New York in a show that brings her work into dialogue with that of the late Chinese sculptor Liu Shiming.

Meet new 2025-2026 TTS scholar Daniel Johansson from Sweden! He's pursuing graduate studies in international finance & economic policy at Columbia Univ.
His favorite Swedish food is classic meatballs & mashed potatoes & smörgåstårta — the sandwich cake is an acquired taste & brings back wonderful memories of Midsummer celebrations for Daniel.
He's got a soft spot for Swedish children's books like "Mamma Mu" because they capture Swedish culture and values.
He loves all things winter, like downhill & cross-country skiing & saunas!
His fave celeb is actor Stellan Skarsgård.
Here's to a successful academic year, Daniel!
