📚 Literacy. Leadership. Service.
Proud to see the RSJ Scholars Program at John Jay College featured in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle for its participation in Read Across America — bringing judges, attorneys, and future legal leaders into classrooms to inspire young readers.
A special thank you to Hon. Joanne D. Quiñones for organizing this impactful initiative and continuing to create meaningful opportunities for service and mentorship within the community.
We are especially proud of RSJ Scholar Nicole Vega, who joined the effort to encourage students to discover the power of reading and imagination.
For more than 13 years, this program has connected the legal community with local schools — demonstrating how mentorship and representation can inspire the next generation.
👏 Congratulations to everyone involved in making this experience so meaningful for the students.

SAVE THE DATE! As of today, we are 7 months away from the 21st Annual CUNY BMI Conference. This year, Brooklyn College will host the entire CUNY BMI Community under one banner "Building Bridges: How Communities Protect and Empower"

Today, the CUNY BMI Rising Scholars of Justice (RSJ) Program was honored to host Professor Marina Karides (University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa) and Dr. Jennifer Stotter, PhD (University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo), moderated by Dr. Jodie Roure, JD, PhD.
The conversation examined the ongoing impacts of U.S. colonialism in Hawaiʻi and Puerto Rico, centering sovereignty, governance, cultural survival, and resistance. Prof. Karides offered a decolonial feminist perspective on island societies and economic systems, while Dr. Stotter provided insight into how institutional structures and policy frameworks reflect broader systems of power and inequality.
Through scholarship and cultural analysis—including reflections on Bad Bunny’s “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaiʻi”—the program connected history, law, and contemporary resistance.
Thank you to the LLS Department, Chairperson Prof. John Gutiérrez, CUNY BMI University Director Dr. Jonathan Quash, PhD, and John Jay College UMI Director Matthew Branch for cosponsoring and providing us with the UMI Lounge space to engage with a broader audience.
