Salaam,

Last night, members of Jawda Institute attended the annual Iftar program held at Queensborough Hall and hosted by the Ramadan Coordinating Committee of Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. The event was well attended and organized with a variety of presentations. There were Qur’an recitations, short talks, a children’s choir sung the national anthem along with two nasheeds, and hardworking members of the greater Queens Muslim community received community service awards. Furthermore, the honorable Melinda Katz acknowledged the contributions of Muslims to New York and extolled the virtues of a just, tolerant, and diverse society.

Special thanks to honorable Melinda Katz, the Ramadan Coordinating Committee, the Queens Borough President’s office, and all who participated or attended the event to make it as successful as it was.

"Am I Free to Go?"

President Trump's immigration policies, rights of immigrants, and anxieties of the community were discussed at a town hall meeting hosted by Interfaith Council for Cultural Development (ICFCD), Sunday, March 5, at Richi Rich Palace, Richmond Hill, Queens, NY. Dr. C. Mario Russell, director of Catholic Charities New York’s Immigrant & Refugee Services Division, reviewed the legality of Trump's executive order on immigration and advised immigrants to know their rights and take certain precautions to avoid being detained by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) officers. Although a federal judge in Washington state stayed the ex*****on of Trump's 'Muslim ban,' his administration ordered the enforcement of existing laws on deportation of undocumented aliens--criminal and non-criminal.

Anxious immigrants should know or have access to a few things (where applicable), such as certificate of disposition, state ID, criminal record, avoid skipping one's court date, lying to federal authorities, DUIs, knowing Miranda rights, giving law enforcement officers only one's name and ID and asking "Am I free to go?," having a family safety plan that includes updated travel and power of attorney docs. A warrant must be produced by an authority seeking entry into one's home, beware of scammers impersonating state and federal officers, saying "I do not consent to this or that search," if appropriate search warrant is not produced. These were some of the important things immigrant lawyers are advising that concerned people should know about.

Other presenters included NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, Eric Post of American Jewish Committee, representative of IDNYC. The event was covered by local media and brought together leaders of faith communities, public officials, NGOs, and concerned citizens. It was co-sponsored by Jawda Institute Inc, Muslim Cultural Center, Indian Diaspora Council, New Sanctuary Coalition, New American Voters Association, New American Women Forum, New Haven Ministries, Nur ul Islam, Shiva Mandir, and Trimurti Bavan Mandir.

Salam. Jawda hosted a remedial workshop yesterday, bringing together administrators, teachers, parents, and students to discuss the importance of high school education and the big failure rate of IndoCaribbean children.

Presenters (all of them qualified teachers with years of experience) were Imtiaz Zaman, Adeeb Zaman, and Saraana Gonzalez. Imtiaz addressed examination requirements, AP course content, emphasizing that parents should understand the high school education process and monitor their children's academic progress.

Adeeb brought an Islamic perspective to the discussion, touching upon the values of Sincerity (ikhlaas), striving for excellence (ihsaan), memorization (hifz), review (muraaji'ah), and good companionship (sahbah) as key factors in the successful acquisition of Islamic as well as secular knowledge.

Saraana focused on Special Education, mentioning major signs that parents should look out for in their children's learning behavior and seek intervention strategies. She outlined the resources available in the public school system to cater for the special education needs of some students. With timely intervention, support services, parental involvement, and trained teachers, students can successfully navigate the learning process.

The informative presentations were followed by an active and engaging Q&A. Many in attendance agreed that JI's Remedial Workshop should be made available in bigger forums to benefit a larger cross-section of the community.

JI has formed an academic advisement and mentoring committee comprised of highly qualified teachers and educators to assist the community in addressing the academic progress and success of high school students, including college preparation.

After the presentations and interactive session, guests socialized and enjoyed the refreshments served, which included oyster cocktails, doubles (channa & bara), jerk chicken, brownies, and chocolate cake, and coconut water.

For queries on academic advisement and mentoring, please do not hesitate to contact us at Jawda.
