For generations, the Cardinal Spellman community has come together to support the students who walk our halls. The journey doesn’t stop at graduation. It’s only the beginning.

As the Class of 2026 prepares for its next chapter, we’re proud to continue celebrating the colleges and universities that will be welcoming our newest Pilot alumni. ✈️🎓

Congratulations to Dr. Carolyn Polchinski, CSHS Class of 1988, on earning her Doctor of Education in K-12 Educational Leadership with a subspecialty in the Cognitive Studies of Literacy Development from the Center for Education at Widener University.

Dr. Polchinski's dissertation research explored how access to book ownership and choice in book selection can transform reader identity development for children in economically disadvantaged communities by expanding reading volume, motivation to read, and reading engagement, while fostering children's individuality and self-perceptions as readers. Insights from data analysis revealed that reading inclusive books that featured authentic representation helped children build meaningful connections and inspired hope, resilience, and optimism.

This research resulted in the formation of Find Book Joy, a Connecticut-based social impact partnership that provides inclusive, culturally responsive texts at no cost to young readers eager to own their own books, some for the very first time. As Program Director and Lead Book Joy Ambassador, Dr. Polchinski leads the development, implementation, and expansion of initiatives that advance equitable access to inclusive books and joyful literacy experiences.

The Find Book Joy program is rooted in the principles of educational justice and affirms that every child deserves the right of entry to reading achievement that begins with the promise and pride of book ownership. Book Joy recipients have shared that they have celebrated their new home book collections by sleeping with their new books tucked under their pillows at night.

Homecoming is almost here! Join us on Saturday, October 17 for a full day of reconnecting with classmates, celebrating Spellman, and cheering on the Pilots as they take on Kennedy Catholic! 🏈🔴⚪️

This year is extra special as we celebrate the Class of 1966 and their 60th Reunion! 🎉

Your Homecoming ticket includes BBQ lunch, soda, wine, beer, a DJ, and a professional photographer with free photo downloads from the Spellman website.

We’re proud to spotlight Mary DiBiase Blaich ’69, whose remarkable career in photography began right here at Cardinal Spellman.

Mary first discovered her passion behind the camera as a member of The Pilot and the Photography Club during the 1968-69 school year. Those early experiences helped launch a professional photojournalism career spanning more than 50 years.

Her career has included eight years as a staff photographer for the New York Daily News, along with decades of freelance work for The New York Times, Catholic New York, and many other organizations. She is also a multiple award winner from the New York Press Photographers Association and Catholic Media Association.

Mary recently shared some of the photographs she captured during her Spellman days, giving us a special look back at the people, traditions, and moments that helped start an incredible career.

More than 50 years behind the lens, and it all started at Spellman. ❤️📸
