Five Months After ‘Save Our Stages’ Became Law, Indie Venues Have Received $0 in Federal Relief 05/27/2021

This is extremely disturbing and is not receiving the kind of media attention it deserves and should be.

Please look for ways to push issues such as this forward by calling federal and state elected officials. Independent theaters and venues must be protected.

“The delay in relief funding has caused immeasurable problems for independent venues and theaters and has ironically aided large live-entertainment companies like Live Nation and AEG: Even with states opening back up, independent venues do not have the funding to secure talent or re-hire their staffs, festival promoters aren’t able to secure fields to hold their events, and the ecosystem around much of the live industry remains stalled — five and a half months after Save Our Stages was passed into law; PPP and the newly launched Restaurant Relief Fund were distributing millions of dollars within days.”

Five Months After ‘Save Our Stages’ Became Law, Indie Venues Have Received $0 in Federal Relief $0: That’s how much money the Small Business Administration has paid independent venues since Save Our Stages Act — which guarantees independent venues and theaters $16 billion in federal pandemic …

Structural Racism by the Numbers and How to Fix It 05/20/2021

Very interesting perspective from OZY on best ways to address and rectify structural racism. I am enjoying the research and writing from Ozy more and more all the time -- they are not just recycling the same 5-10 stories, which is really hurting the news business. Hope you read and find some takeaways from this piece.

Opinion | America Needs History and Civics Education to Promote Unity 04/22/2021

The Roadmap for Teaching American Democracy was written by six former Education Secretaries: Lamar Alexander, Arne Duncan, John King, Rod Paige, Richard Riley and Margaret Spellings.

Many of the suggestions are thoughtful, detailed, and inclusive with an arc of equity in mind. This The Wall Street Journal article is from March, and yet I did not see it six weeks ago. However, I will note that in reading a number of the comments, I was saddened by the cynicism of so many Americans — if they are actually real people. The suggestions of these Secretaries would not be easy, but America needs to start thinking differently with education. The gap is widening at an alarming rate. At least these people have produced a thoughtful plan that is the basis for initial discussion.

Offer your thoughts in the comments.

Opinion | America Needs History and Civics Education to Promote Unity A plan to help teachers instill an understanding that is complete and honest but not cynical.

A Test for the Test Makers 04/15/2021

Interesting in-depth piece from EducationNext about the and it’s growth — all in the shadows of questionable practices regarding the equity fairness questions. I imagine that there have been calls for the College Board to be more transparent for years, but even “test-optional and test-blind admissions policies accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic would appear to imperil College Board’s SAT college-entrance exam, the rival ACT, and their respective parent organizations” is not the case according to this piece.

It’s worth reading - a bit dense, but very well researched, reported and written.

I Was A School Bully. Here's Why I Terrorized My Classmates. 04/10/2021

This is one of the most honest essays I have ever read. As a former school administrator, I am enthralled with the psychology of bullying, and I periodically felt that I did not do enough to help kids who were deep-down in need. But it wasn’t always so easy to do because I was not a counselor, teacher or division head. As a consultant, I have encouraged many school leadership people to frequently examine and address the social/emotional parts of childhood and pay close attention to what students are saying, doing, and experiencing. It’s not too hard to recognize why bullying happens. Taking the necessary steps to protect everyone involved is the hard part.

I Was A School Bully. Here's Why I Terrorized My Classmates. "I do not remember feeling bad about the suffering I was causing. I was governed by the fear of my secret getting out."
