Dear Colleagues,
you’re cordially invited to submit your paper proposal for the “Drama and Society” panel at the upcoming PAMLA Conference in November: this year we’re particularly interested in translation and adaptation of drama and performance across languages and cultures, but any topic about theatre/performance and society is welcome, as there is space for two or more panels.

“Drama and Society Panel”
Drama has long served as a communal mirror to society, reflecting its habits, aesthetics, politics, and cultural norms. This session seeks to discuss the many ways in which drama reveals its intricate relationship to society. Papers for this session are welcomed that explore how drama supports, embodies, and critiques the society in which it was created; how theatre arts, with its variety of tools, successfully conveys the complexities of such a relationship. Papers are also encouraged to consider the topic from the perspective of diverse places, time periods, and genres.
Papers that address the conference theme “Translation in Action” are especially welcome. What are the challenges of translated/adapted drama, texts aimed at becoming action on stage? How does a shift from one chronotope to another – from one society to another, in another time and space – prompt necessary changes in terms not only linguistic but also practical? What transformations does translated and adapted drama entail for characters, situations, performers’ gender, locales, or themes?

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As the year comes to a close and the holidays are upon us, we wanted to invite you to celebrate “Italian style” with a newly translated, and little-known, short story by the great Italian author, Luigi Pirandello. Known as a skeptic of all forms of faith, Pirandello probably doesn’t seem the most likely author of Christmas tales. But in 1896, he published two of them in close succession to mark the holiday. The first, published on Christmas day in Roma letteraria, is now available as a part of our in-progress (soon-to-be) complete English translation of his Stories for a Year (Novelle per un anno): “Christmas on the Rhine” (“Natale sul Reno”), translated by Jacob DeCarli. We warmly invite you to read it here: https://www.pirandellointranslation.org/christmas-on-the-rhine
The second, “A Christmas Dream” (“Sogno di Natale”), was published two days later in the Rassegna settimanale universale, and a new English translation by Michael Subialka will be posted on the website shortly – so check back soon.
In addition to these little-known Christmas stories, our open access scholarly edition of Stories for a Year now features 46 other short stories in new English translations, many of which have never been translated into English before. You can browse the full edition, including the editors’ introduction to the project, here: https://www.pirandellointranslation.org/
We are proud to feature the work of a team of translators from across the globe, and want to acknowledge the contributions of Caterina Agostini, Sarah Barrett, Fabio Battista, Scott Belluz, Alexander Bertland, Howard Curtis, Julie Dashwood, Jacob DeCarli, Steve Eaton, Maria Enrico, Marella Feltrin-Morris, Jonathan R. Hiller, Enzo Lauretta, Marla Moffa, Emanuela Pecchioli, Robin Pickering-Iazzi, Patricia Stumpp, and Julianne VanWagenen.
Our team may be large, but it is also still growing! We invite interested professionals with translation experience working with literary texts from Italian to English to contact us, as the project is ongoing into the new year and the editors are actively accepting proposals for new translations. You can contribute to the effort to finally make Pirandello’s complete corpus of short stories available (free and widely) to the English-reading public.
Wishing you all a happy holiday season,
Lisa and Michael
