Did you know that almost 50% of American children are at an unhealthy weight? This has serious consequences for our society, including high healthcare costs, a lower standard of life, and the first time the latest generation won’t live as long as the last. Many of these children come from under-served communities where parents lack the money, resources, and time to provide healthy meals for their
families. CHEFs for Schools analyzed this problem, and we found that many non-profits exist to fight obesity and diet related diseases, but they were missing one thing: volunteers. CHEFs was created to act as a positive change broker between established nonprofits in the wellness sector and local colleges/universities. We train volunteers in nutrition, basic cooking skills, and community investment, and then pair them with a non-profit volunteer program in order to increase that non-profit’s capacity for change. At NYU, we have partnered with the Food Bank for New York City's CookShop program, a federally funded nutrition education program offered in public schools with 60% or more students on free lunch. CHEFs, as the primary provider of volunteers for the program, has helped CookShop triple the number of classrooms they reach, thereby benefiting over 60,000 children in all five boroughs. Right now, CHEFs would like to replicate this success and expand to the next worthwhile service opportunity. With your voice, time, and contribution, we will be able to make this effort a success. Awareness: We host food policy lectures and panels so you can know the larger reasons for choosing to care. Education: Gain knowledge that can be immediately put into action by volunteering with the Food Bank for NYC’s CookShop program. Cultivation: Gain new skills and connections by participating in FREE monthly cooking classes and civic engagement events. Access: Work to increase the number of greenmarkets, eradicate food deserts, and increase the availability of affordable and healthy food in underserved communities. Invest: Commit to making a difference by contributing what time and resources you can. Current Partners:
