Today marks one year since the loss of our beloved founder, Agnes “Aggie” Gund.

Aggie believed deeply in the power of art to change lives, and that every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, challenge, and possibility of making art.

As we approach five decades of Studio in a School, her vision continues to guide us: bringing meaningful visual arts experiences to generations of young people.

We remain profoundly grateful for Aggie’s leadership, generosity, friendship, and indomitable spirit. Her legacy lives on in every classroom, every studio, and every young person whose possibilities are expanded through art.

Isca's beautiful flower and landscape paintings pair wonderfully with our Teach and Create unit, "Drawing Imaginary Plants with Oil Pastels." In this unit, students look closely at real and imagined flowers and plants to gain inspiration for their own unique creation.

"I treated this embroidery as painting with thread. This was the first time I had worked with embroidery, so to create the portrait, I chose colors and certain techniques that spoke to me. I created a color palette that was not necessarily typical of a portrait: the facial region was embroidered with vibrant colors rather than the traditional skin tones. I wished to express the essence of my friend, Maya, as a person beyond her physical appearance. To me, she is a lively person that brings life to a space with her presence; I wanted to reflect that with the colors used."

This stunning artwork was created by 12th grader Ella Weng of Edward R. Murrow High School, and was selected for P.S. Art 2026, an exhibition showcasing NYC student artwork at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Studio in a School is proud to partner with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and New York City Public Schools to bring P.S. Art to life and to award all graduating seniors, including Ella, with $1,000 toward their future art endeavors.

We’re excited to celebrate our colleague Ryan C. Hamilton, Director of Teen Administration & Teen Apprenticeship Program, who was recently featured by GLAAD as part of its 2026 Equity in Media and Entertainment (EMEI) cohort!

A Brooklyn-based photographer, Ryan’s work centers Black q***r life with intimacy, care, and a commitment to preserving everyday stories for generations to come.

A trip to the zoo sparked some major art inspiration this summer!

Through Summer Arts Institute (SAI), middle school students worked with Studio Artist Instructor James Reynolds and DOE teacher Maria Bonilla to expand their art lessons through visits to the Central Park Zoo, The Met, and MoMA. Back in the classroom, students applied their observations to explore new techniques and build their art portfolios.

Hear from Yitong L. about their experience in the program:

"Although it has only been a few weeks at SAI, I managed to improve my art skills at a faster rate than I have during the school year. My peers and I visited museums to study how other artists created their pieces and applied this knowledge to our own work. I learned how to apply new techniques into my art as a result and with new materials."
