Meet Alyssa Moore (She/her)!
Department : History
Achievments:
Alyssa is a second-year Archives and Public History master's student. Her thesis will take the form of an audio documentary and will focus on the history of Emergency Medical Services in New York City from 1860 through 1910. Today the sound of ambulance sirens echoing off of New York’s skyscrapers is a ubiquitous occurrence; nearly 150 years ago, however, an organized ambulance service in the United States was far from a reality. While historically, first aid was rendered by an at-home physician, low-income immigrant communities, who were often most impacted by injury and illness from overcrowding, poor sanitation, and appalling work conditions, were financially unable to seek emergency healthcare.
To assuage wealthy New Yorkers, who feared diseases of the working class would spread to their neighborhoods, in 1869 Dr. Edward Dalton devised the first civilian ambulance service at Bellevue Hospital. It consisted of two horse-drawn stagecoaches outfitted with stretchers, bandages, and a bottle of whiskey to ease the patient's pain. Dalton's service quickly became a resounding success among all classes.
It may be tempting to view the modern ambulance as an inevitable development in the history of emergency medicine. Alyssa's research, however, challenges that assumption. By exploring interactions between technology, economics, and changing patterns of disease and injury, she examines emergency medicine and evolving nativist beliefs regarding the working-class body at turn-of-the-century New York when class and ethnicity were seen as intrinsically intertwined with an individual’s bodily health.
On top of Alyssa's academic studies, she currently interns with the Collections Department at New-York Historical Society, where she assists in managing new acquisitions, handling loans for exhibitions, and housing and cataloging rich and diverse historical objects.

Meet Eleonor Botoman (she/her, they,them)!
Department: XE & Museum Studies
Socials:
Eleonor is currently a second-year XE and Museum Studies master's student. Her research focuses on environmental art, particularly how art and cultural institutions are grappling with the impacts of and adapting to climate change. Recently, thanks to a travel grant from the Museum Studies department, she was able to travel to Miami to visit the Perez Art Museum, a museum that was designed with flood mitigation and sustainability in mind.
Her thesis will compare the Perez to the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia (both museums located in two of the nation's most vulnerable coastal regions) to see how a newer institution is implementing these adaptations into their architecture and infrastructure versus a more historical site that was built before current threats of flooding and sea-level rise. Having grown up in South Florida's unique cultural and tropical ecosystem, she wants to explore how institutions can approach these threats of disaster in proactive, sustainable ways, while also creating opportunities for environmental education for their visitors and surrounding communities.
On top of Eleonor's academic studies, she currently works at the Cooper Hewitt Museum and as a freelance cultural critic, focusing on science fiction and environmental art.
