Workshop Description
"Anything But Another Diversity Training:" Reimagining the Field with the Dialogue Arts Project
In an increasingly pluralistic society, the need for self-awareness, tolerance and open communication has never been more critical – and nowhere are the stakes higher than in the arena of public education. Despite this, the field of diversity education has struggled to meaningfully respond to that challenge and educators have grown weary of professional development sessions that seem to merely “fill a quota” in addressing critical issues of race and social identity in the classroom. By combining performance, creative writing and intergroup dialogue practices, the Dialogue Arts Project reaches beyond those safe, cookie-cutter efforts to help teachers and students collaborate and communicate more effectively across lines of social identity and difference.
In this highly interactive classroom demonstration, participants will be led through the stages of a typical DAP workshop experience: Active Art, Creative Workshop and Dialogue. In addition to merely modeling a collection of DAP’s best teaching practices, however, this classroom demonstration will include an important debriefing discussion about the urgency of this work, during which participants will share hopes and fears related to social justice and equity in their own learning communities.
