There's a quiet realization many capable leaders come to.
They're not failing. They're not behind. They're not missing a skill.
The role they're in has simply evolved—without being intentionally redesigned.
Responsibilities have accumulated. Invisible work has become structural. Decision authority hasn't kept pace.
This is the moment leaders stop trying to cope better—and start asking better questions.
What does this role need to be now?
That question isn't about self-protection. It's about leadership.
If you're at this point, I work with senior leaders navigating exactly this kind of inflection.
A conversation is a good place to start.

There’s a quiet kind of burnout many capable leaders experience.
On paper, the role looks reasonable.
The workload isn’t extreme.
Nothing is obviously “wrong.”
And yet—there’s a constant sense of carrying more than what was ever named.
This often happens through role drift.
Competence leads to trust.
Trust leads to responsibility sticking.
Over time, leaders absorb legacy work, emotional labor, and decision-making authority simply because someone has to hold it.
None of this shows up in a job description.
All of it shapes how leadership capacity is used.
Intentional leadership begins when leaders pause—not to push harder or recover—but to clarify. To ask: What is this role actually designed to hold now?
Because when roles evolve without being redesigned, even the most capable leaders end up stretched in ways that don’t serve them—or the organization.
Before taking on more, it’s worth asking:
What am I carrying that was never explicitly designed—and what is it costing the organization if it stays invisible?

Ever notice how January feels harder than it should?
You’re coming off a strong year-end.
You have clear Q1 goals.
And yet — focus feels slower, decisions take more effort, and energy runs out earlier.
This isn’t a discipline issue.
Research shows the post-holiday winter transition affects up to 20% of people, with real neurological impact on attention, memory, and decision-making. Seasonal Affective Disorder and circadian rhythm disruption are well-documented — and they quietly influence workplace performance every January.
Yet many leaders blame themselves instead of the system.
The most effective leaders don’t deny January’s reality.
They recognize it, plan for it, and adjust ex*****on accordingly.
This month, I’ll be breaking down what that looks like — step by step.

"What exactly are you looking for?"
A leader asked their team for solutions and got this response instead. 😬
They'd accidentally trained their team to depend on them rather than innovate.
Here's what I've learned from coaching leaders: Silence isn't awkward—it's powerful. It creates space for others to step up and shine.
Your thoughts? How comfortable are you with silence as a leader?

In the business world, we should take a page from our science labs days in how to approach work. Experimentation, I contend, is one of the best ways to continually learn, think of a problem from a different angle and get creative in actually solving it, and foster innovation.

The responsibilities of a CEO continue to be an ever-growing list. Add a new point to that: being the chief storyteller. Storytelling is an effective communication tool to excite, motivate and inform others about the status of a company, especially when the CEO embraces it.
