👁️ Why patients can read a newspaper, but not a magazine after concussion?
When vision is affected after a concussion, small things make a big difference.
📱 Start with dimmer, smaller screens like your phone, then gradually progress to tablets and larger monitors — this helps retrain your eyes to handle a longer horizontal movement circuit.
📰 Many patients find newspaper reading easier than glossy magazines because:
• Columns are narrower = shorter eye travel distance
• Matte paper reduces glare and contrast overload
• It’s less neurologically “offensive” for the visual system
🎯 Vision rehab is like physical training — you build tolerance step by step. Short, paced exposure leads to long-term recovery.
At Concussion Corner Academy®, we teach clinicians how to spot these subtle visual clues and guide patients through graded exposure safely and compassionately.

🎓✨ Two weeks ago, we had the incredible opportunity to connect with Dr. , President-Elect of the Concussion in Sport Group and , and one of the world’s leading pediatric concussion researchers, during a live Q&A inside Concussion Corner Academy®.
👁️ Dr. Master shared why vision assessment and rehabilitation are essential in concussion care — especially in children and adolescents. Vision changes are often invisible yet profoundly affect recovery, learning, and quality of life.
💡 She reminded us that compassionate, evidence-informed care starts with understanding the whole person — and vision is a critical piece of that puzzle.

🧠💥 MEDICAL COMMENTARY: SIDELINE CARE MATTERS
During today’s Finals, forward Satou Sabally sustained a serious injury to her head and neck that was rotational and compressive in nature coupled with a direct hit to one of the most vulnerable areas of the skull, the temple.
This type of mechanism raises concern for both concussion and potential cervical spine involvement, including spinal cord compression or cervical cord neuropraxia.
When an athlete experiences a possible head and neck injury, lifting or moving them manually without stabilizing the neck can cause serious secondary injury.
Here’s what should happen:
✅ Stop play immediately and assess airway, breathing, and circulation.
✅ Keep the neck stabilized and avoid any movement until spinal injury is ruled out.
✅ Activate EMS if there is neck pain, numbness, or any loss of movement.
✅ Follow the S**T6 and NATA emergency action plans for concussion and spine trauma.
What we saw today is a reminder that concussion and spinal injury protocols are not just medical checklists, they are lifesaving procedures designed to protect athletes’ futures both on and off the court.
As clinicians and advocates, we MUST continue to push for evidence-based sideline care and accountability in professional sports.
It’s not just the diminishing calls of the refs this season, we must make sure our sideline teams are also at peak performance for our top athletes in the world.
Prayers to the Sabally sisters and their family tonight. Here’s to a speedy recovery and comprehensive medial care for Satou tonight 🙏

🧠🌍 What a gift to learn from and moderate Dr. for Concussion Corner Academy® Week One of Concussion: The Patient Rehabilitation Journey Part I. We covered updates from the Concussion in Sport Group and their membership, PRISM Society and their membership, new research including the first randomized controlled trial RCT on vision therapy for concussion and convergence insufficiency (CONCUSS), and so much more. I am grateful for Dr. Master, for her integrity, passion, and kindness, and for the way she leads while continuing to treat patients as a true clinician scientist. Volunteer organizations like CISG and PRISM are powered by people who give their time to move the field forward and I am thankful for their service while being able to amplify their messaging.
