Our Story
La Casa de la Herencia Cultural Puertorriqueña, Inc. [The Puerto Rican Cultural Heritage House] (La Casa) is a 501 (C) (3), tax exempt, not-for-Profit, historical cultural organization, developed in 1980, and officially incorporated in 1983 to advance, disseminate and preserve the culture and literary heritage of Puerto Rico, and its diaspora in New York City and beyond.
La Casa is located in El Barrio/Spanish Harlem, and serves the general public through education, research, special events, and advocacy concerning the Puerto Rican nation, its legacy and aspirations in the Caribbean and throughout the world.
Assemblyman Luís Nine and Dr. Loisa Rivera led a team of Puerto Rican professionals who collectively fostered the cultural and literary work that has made this Spanish Harlem institution flourish to the present. From its inception, La Casa has had a rich and varied path in documenting and sharing Puerto Rican cultural contributions to the world – from the island, and its diaspora. With its large and diverse library of study and scientific research, La Casa has served as a node in the vast network that is the Boricua nation. Our literary holdings span the Americas. Our archives include a collection of rare microfilms, hundreds of posters, photographs, arts and crafts, videos, and artifacts from pre-Columbian times. Our library and archives are available to everyone.
