NYU Tisch Department of Art and Public Policy

The politics that make art. The politics that art makes. This is an opportunity for artists and those working in domains of art to enhance and elaborate.

The Department of Art & Public Policy, established by the faculty and the Dean of the Tisch School of the Arts, is an interdisciplinary initiative that includes faculty and students from the 13 departments of Tisch. The Department embodies the School's recognition that young artists and scholars need an opportunity to incubate their ideas outside of the safe haven of the academy, in a dialectic with real-world problems.

The fall semester is coming soon and we look forward to meeting our new students including Lydia Hussain. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Lydia is heavily informed by her multicultural upbringing and Guyanese heritage. Through her experience working with museums in Miami and at the Fine Arts Center of Colorado Springs, she has developed a passion for blending curatorial work, art writing, and activism. Other fields of interest to her include archives, diaspora, politics, and community-building.

She has studied human rights and researched art history in various locations worldwide, including Guyana, Jordan, Nepal, and France, among others. To her, an important aspect of art and writing is their ability to create community and understanding cross-culturally— a vital aspect to social responsibility and justice. She incorporates this through her focus on Caribbean voices and is excited to expand on her research in NYU’s Arts Politics Master’s program. Lydia is dedicated to creating artistic spaces that are accessible and socio-politically impactful.
