Columbia Research Unit is looking for volunteers 65 years old or more to participate in a clinical trial for a C. difficile vaccine. C. difficile (C. diff) is a contagious bacteria (germ) that infects the colon (large intestine) and can cause diarrhea and other health complications. Visiting an emergency department or urgent care clinic increases your risk of infection. Recent antibiotic use may increase risk of infection as well.
If you are 65 years old or more and have not had C. difficile, you may be eligible, and if you:
• Have had 10 or more healthcare visits in the last year,
• Have been hospitalized at least once in the last year,
• Are scheduled to be hospitalized or have elective surgery, or
• Have received antibiotics in the last 3 months
If this clinical trial is a good fit for you and you agree to take part, here is what you can expect:
1. You will be assigned by chance (like flipping a coin) to receive 2 doses of the investigational C. diff vaccine or placebo (injection with no vaccine) given about 6 months apart.
2. Participation may last up to 3-1/2 years.
3. In the first 18 months, you will have at least 3 in-person visits and 3 phone calls.
4. You will then have one annual visit until the study ends.
5. There is no cost to participate. You will be paid at least $750.00 for completing some clinical trial activities.
