NEW 🎧 - EP183 Navigating the Ethics of Technology in Public Health with Dr. Daniel Fogal
In this episode, we speak with Dr. Daniel Fogal, Assistant Professor of Bioethics at NYU GPH, about his course Advanced Introduction to The Ethics of Technology. Dr. Fogal shares his journey from a philosophy undergraduate degree to joining the NYU Center for Bioethics, mapping how the discipline has expanded beyond traditional doctor-patient relationships and research ethics to address broader population-level challenges. We dive into complex global issues, including the allocation of scarce medical resources and the modern ethical implications brought on by the rise of social media and artificial intelligence self driving vehicles. Dr. Fogal discusses his passion for teaching applied, controversial issues in the classroom, explaining how he leverages the diverse perspectives of his students to help them think more clearly, carefully, and critically. This conversation highlights NYU GPH's unique interdisciplinary expertise and teaching excellence, showing how grounding public health issues in ethical frameworks equips students to navigate tomorrow's scientific and technological challenges.

Responding to Ebola: Understanding the Bundibugyo Strain and the Current Outbreak
Wednesday, May 27, 2026, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. (ET)
Online
Join the NYU School of Global Public Health for an important discussion on the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus.
This webinar will bring together public health experts to examine the latest developments, transmission dynamics, response efforts, and lessons learned for outbreak preparedness and prevention. The conversation will also explore the role and effectiveness of quarantine measures, travel advisories, and border restrictions, as well as the social and ethical considerations surrounding these policies.
Panelists will discuss what scientists currently know, and still do not know, about the Bundibugyo virus, including how it differs from more familiar Ebola strains, what is understood about its transmission and severity, and the ongoing uncertainties around diagnostics, vaccines, treatments, and the potential for wider regional spread. Attendees will gain insight into the broader political, health system, and community factors shaping the response and what this moment means for global health security moving forward.

NYU and NYC DOT Team Up on New E-Bike Health Study
New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Mike Flynn and New York University (NYU) today launched the NYC E-Bike Health Study, a first-of-its-kind research collaboration examining how electric bike (e-bike) use and cycling infrastructure shape the cardiovascular health of New Yorkers.
Research shows that e-biking produces moderate physical activity that is greater than walking or sedentary travel, yet large-scale, population-level evidence on what that means for New Yorkers’ health, and whether those benefits are available to all residents, is still limited. The NYC E-Bike Health Study, led by NYU Professor Rumi Chunara, is designed to fill that gap.

Study Finds Regional Differences in Sickle Cell Disease in New York State
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States. Approximately 10 percent of people with SCD in the US live in New York State, with the majority residing in New York City.
A new study led by researchers at NYU School of Global Public Health finds that SCD care is unevenly distributed across regions in New York State. New York City has the largest proportion of hospitalizations and Long Island has the highest charges for care, but hospital stays are longer in other areas with less access to specialized care, according to the study published in JAMA Network Open.
SCD affects the body’s red blood cells. A genetic mutation, which is most prevalent among people of African descent, causes cells to become crescent-shaped. These cells block blood vessels and can lead to excruciating pain and progressive organ damage. Despite effective treatments, like the use of the medication hydroxyurea that can prevent pain crises, individuals with SCD still face frequent hospitalizations.
“A range of factors can influence care for sickle cell disease—whether people are experiencing multiple health conditions at once, whether hospitals have a dedicated sickle cell disease team with hematologists with specialized training, or have protocols in the emergency department for people who present in crisis,” said study author Emeka Iloegbu, a public health scientist who recently earned his DrPH at the NYU School of Global Public Health.
