State University of New York Financial Aid Days 2015

SUNY is offering two Financial Aid Days to assist prospective students and their families in applying for financial aid and completing the FAFSA. This year, the dates are January 24 and February 28.

Baruch College - The City University of New York (CUNY) 01/05/2015

Baruch College S.T.E.P. (Science Technology Entry Program) still accepting applications!

Baruch College S.T.E.P. (Science Technology Entry Program) still has specific slots open for our upcoming spring semester which starts this Saturday, January 10th. The spring program meets on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 2 p.m. for the next 12 weeks starting this Saturday.

We are still recruiting students specifically for three different tracks:

1) Eligible 9th grade students interested in the following curriculum:
a. Integrated Algebra from 9 – 10:30 a.m.
b. Living Environment Regents from 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon
c. College Readiness course from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.

2) Eligible 11th grade students interested in a SAT Prep Course taught by Kaplan Test Prep Services.
a. Kaplan offers a comprehensive test preparation program that utilizes classroom sessions, diagnostic tests, as well as online services to help prepare students for their spring SAT exams.
b. There is a $100 course fee for this particular class (only) that can be paid online.

3) Eligible upper level students interested in the following curriculum:
a. Math in the Real World from 9 – 10:30 a.m.
b. Physics Review from 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon
c. Intro to STEM Fields (Lecture Series) 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.

Who Are We?
The STEP Academy is a pre-college program for eligible high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, math, and health-related professions. The program is funded by the New York State Education Department which seeks to increase the participation of students who are historically underrepresented in these fields. For a student to be eligible for the STEP program they must be:
a student enrolled in grades 7 -12 in the state of New York with good academic standing (minimum grade point average of 80)
a New York State resident for a minimum of 12 months before applying to the program
a member of a historically underrepresented group (as defined by the New York State Education Department) in the scientific, technical, health-related, and licensed professions. This includes African-American, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American Indian OR must be economically disadvantaged as indicated in the table below:

Federal Diversity Internship Initiative: U.S. Government Internships

The Washington Center offers the Federal Diversity Internship Initiative (formerly known as the Competitive Government Program) to help students from a wide variety of backgrounds access opportunities with selected government agencies. Positions are located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area as well as in other regions across the United States.

The Federal Diversity Internship Initiative is open to all qualified candidates without regard to their race, gender, color, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age, physical or mental disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic prohibited by state or local law.

Program Components
Internship: Students are immersed in a work environment full-time (40 hours/week) and receive direction from a mentor at the federal agency.
Professional Development: In addition to the internship experience, students have an academic program advisor who organizes workshops on various topics (conducted as webinars for students placed outside of the D.C. area) and provides feedback on written assignments.

Eligibility

In order to be considered for the Federal Diversity Internship Initiative, you must:

Be a U.S. citizen (no exceptions)
Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program during the term of your internship (or for some agencies, have received a degree within the past 18 months)
Have a 3.0 GPA
Demonstrate a strong interest in working with a federal agency

Each NEW Leadership™ class includes a diverse group of students from across New Jersey. In order to maintain this diversity, NEW Leadership™ has always been free for the students. Boost Scholarship Program 12/29/2014

The New York Metropolitan Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is pleased to announce its inaugural Boost Scholarship opportunity.

The aim of the Boost Scholarship is to support academically talented
and community engaged African-American seniors currently attending high school in Manhattan.

The Boost Scholarship reflects Jack and Jill’s historical commitment to developing African-American youth through education and is meant to support students as they reach their highest potential.
Boost Scholarships will provide financial support and supplemental funding for students entering four year undergraduate colleges or universities. Boost recipients must demonstrate academic excellence,
leadership skills, and a commitment to community service.

Scholarship awards will not exceed $2500 for the 2015-16 academic year.
