UN EMBLEM AND FLAG
We bet that you immediately recognize the UN emblem but do you know what it means? Today we’ll learn it and other interesting facts! 👐🏼
BASICS
🔹Each element represents pillars of the UN activities: branches of the olive tree symbolize peace as the main goal of the UN and the map displays an area where it intends to achieve it.
🔹Flag of the UN is the UN emblem placed on the blue background. Allegedly, blue colour represents peace in opposition to red for war.
🔹The emblem and flag have the practical effect of identifying the UN in areas of trouble and conflict.
HISTORY
🔹The original UN emblem was created in 1945 by a team of designers during the UN Conference on International Organization.
🔹The UN emblem was designed to be "a map of the world representing an azimuthal equidistant projection centred on the North Pole, inscribed in a wreath consisting of crossed conventionalized branches of the olive tree, in gold on a field of smoke-blue with all water areas in white. The projection of the map extends to 60 degrees south latitude, and includes five concentric circles".
🔹On the 7th of December 1946 General Assembly approved the final version of the UN emblem, which exists to this day.
🔹On October 1947 The United Nations flag was approved by the GA resolution 167 (II).
INTERESTING FACTS
🔹The flag may be used in accordance with the UN Flag Code by organizations and individuals in order to demonstrate support of the United Nations and to its principles and purposes.
🔹When the United Nations flag is displayed with the flag of a State or another international organization, all flags should be displayed on the same level and should be of approximately equal size;
🔹The United Nations flag may be lowered to half mast to indicate a period of mourning.
