ESSENTIALS & EXPANSION
In addition to contributing to the security of The ROC’s sustainability in New York City, memberships also help with expanding The ROC's reach to resources for expanding our Network for Learning (NFL) to students, independent learners and families.
Memberships are key in helping The ROC maintain the crucial expenses of rent and insurance necessary to secure space, and they are the primary source for sustaining other much needed items such as utilities, equipment, supplies, services, fieldtrips (we achieved scoring an impossible-to-get a batch of Comic Con tickets again this year!), etc., and they also help fund essentials that class enrollment isn't always able to fully sustain such as our teachers, experts, clubs, staff, and competition teams (our ROCbotics took first place at Dalton High School Tournament for the second year in a row, and our new second team came in second!).
COMMUNITY & CELEBRATING DIVERSITY
Additionally, memberships help The ROC support scholarship funding and families in need, and also underwrite The ROC's ability to sponsor meetings, conferences, events, and other important community building endeavors.
Expanding on our Network for Learning (NFL) philosophy that learning should be networked across multiple relationships, integrated across multiple disciplines, cultures, communities, and experienced through diverse methods, mediums, modalities and applications, we hope to continue hosting series of Parent Discussion / Support groups, as well as Community-Wide workshops exploring everything from various philosophies and methods of 21st Century Learning worldwide to Best Practices for Homeschooling in NYC, to workshops in Food Fermentation and Nutrition, to documentary screenings of films investigating education like Most Likely to Succeed to teen and family fun with Silent Discos, and screenings like piano accompanied Silent Movies and Cartoons from the early 1900s!!! and so much more...
PARTNERSHIPS & COLLABORATIONS
Memberships also help The ROC develop and support strong partnerships with other Homeschool Groups and Centers, as well as with major organizations that have been dedicated to learning and intellectual, social and career development for over a century.
With our wonderful membership support, our robotics teams and their success have propelled our students and learners to exclusive opportunities with FIRST Robotics Leagues, Maker Fair, Games for Change and more; some in which our students and learners have been selected as representatives to present to Corporate Sponsors of these vital STEM organizations. Together with Girl Scouts, some of our STEM students and learners have been recognized by a Mayor's Alliance and chosen as part of only 20 out of thousands to receive mentorship conferencing with corporations such as W Hotel, Walmart and Jet.com.
And, new for this year, working directly with the YMCA, and hopefully increased membership support, we plan to both reach other groups of independent learners, while expanding our offerings, as well as our physical space capacities (Tennis, anyone? :) (How about swimming!!!)
MEMBER BENEFITS
All of The ROC's member categories enjoy discounts on classes and many other awesome benefits! Although Sponsoring (and Sustaining and Investing) Members are empowered with the deepest discounts on both classes, space use and more, all the memberships garner invaluable benefits to the member families while also helping The ROC meet the needs of all families.

***Receive huge discounts off Membership prices if you register during our Membership Drive from now through August 28, 2018!****

HIP HOP DANCE
Students will learn fun dance moves to some of their favorite rhythms and beats. The class combines basic hip hop dance skills with both old school moves and current moves seen in music videos. Rhythm, coordination, improvisation, musicality and confidence all get a boost in this class, and instruction is attentive to ensure every student gets a chance to shine. Students will learn to communication through movement, individually, and as a team. No dance experience required. Taught by a Town Hall Educational Outreach instructor
SPELLING SKILL BUILDERS
Spelling is more than just memorizing lists of words. One of the most effective ways for students to understand and spell vocabulary is to experience multiple, meaningful exposure to words. Students begin with an assessment that is used to measure their developmental stage. Based on students' assessments, individualized word lists will be created, and students will work them in a variety of ways including games and spelling bees! Specific skills addressed will be spelling rules and generalizations, sight words, consonant blends, soft c and g, syllabication and syllable types, affixes and roots, digraphs, diphthongs, homonyms, silent letters, possessives and contractions.
This course provides support for spellers hoping to participate in the Scripps Spelling Bee, and this course is also available as a 10 hour/ 2 day intensive.
Spelling Skill Builders is being taught by a teacher who has been teaching with a focus on ways of maximizing student engagement and learning for over 10 years.
KNITTING for ALL AGES
Learn the mathematics and aesthetics of knitting! Feel the joy of creating something from your heart with your own hands. There are so many benefits in learning to knit - the math and the science behind the brain benefits of practicing knitting compares to studying piano, which has been shown to improve mathematical thinking. Through the continental style using a Waldorf-inspired method, students will learn knots as they are being made, each step of the way, to gain deep understanding that sets up for less troubleshooting as the project gets underway. Students are free to bring a working project! Other knitting methods welcome. Crochet can also be taught if desired. Taught by a Lifelong knitter, who is also a Certified Health Coach, student of theology and the mystics, and who has been practicing yoga for over 20 years.
YOGA for ALL AGES
Active and relaxing at the same time. Get moving, massage the nervous system, gain flexibility and focus, tone muscles you didn't even know you had! Influenced by Ashtanga, Integral, Sivananda and classical Hatha style yoga traditions. Includes some chanting, deep relaxation and meditation. Also, many of the poses are named for animals, which is fun at any age. Taught by a Lifelong knitter, who is also a Certified Health Coach, student of theology and the mystics, and who has been practicing yoga for over 20 years.
ROC Band!
The ROC band will give students an opportunity to learn about and play with any of the rhythmic instruments such as the keyboard/piano, drums, guitar, and more. In the end, the participants should have a basic understanding of their particular instrument and feel comfortable enough to play a tune with the ROC(K), or Jazz or Classical band!
The ROC Band is being led by a globally touring musician who received his BA from Bennington, and is well versed in many different genres of music.
PRESENTATION & DEFENCE: THE GREAT SCIENCE DEBATES
Knowing how to give a good presentation or how to articulate ideas well is important in any field. However, many students in the sciences (and even professional scientists) do not do well in situations where they have to defend their ideas. In this class, students will learn how to defend scientific theories, debate scientific hypothesis, and argue effectively. Students will simultaneously learn concepts from all branches of science. By the end of these classes, students will have improved or enhanced presentation skills, be able to defend theories using critical thinking, and ultimately, how to make a brilliant scientific argument.
This class is being taught by a teacher who's love of science is infectious, he has been educated within our own community, and is now well on his way to becoming a theoretical physicist.
