Performance Studies The Department of Performance Studies is the first program in the world to focus on performance as the object of analysis.

Our programs explore the ways that performance creates meaning and shapes social life. We offer a BA, MA, and PhD in Performance Studies. In Fall 2014, we will accept applications for our first ever undergraduate class. The Performance Studies BA Program begins in the fall of 2015! Our curriculum trains students to document, theorize, and analyze embodied practices and events. Areas of concentrati

on include: contemporary performance, dance, movement analysis, folk and popular performance, postcolonial theory, feminist and q***r theory, and performance theory. Career opportunities include:

Fall 2026 classes begin in less than two weeks on September 2nd! We are so excited to welcome students back to the 6th floor! We have a mandatory new student orientation for all incoming PS B.A., M.A., and PhDs, on Tuesday September 1st. Please make sure you fill out the RSVP form emailed this week. Attention PS Alumni - There are just a few weeks left to submit a session for PRAXIS: INC — Innovate, Network, Collaborate on Saturday, October 24th, 2026, by September 8th, 2026.

We are excited to share this signature PS event during NYU’s Alumni and Families Weekend! This will allow more alumni in town to attend the event as well as the families of PS students visiting for the campus wide celebration! This event is a special opportunity for alumni across the PS community to come together and share their skills in the field of Performance Studies, engage in important conversations, and stay connected with colleagues and peers.

Praxis includes a wide range of programming like visual artwork, practicum workshops, performance lectures, and information sessions. Some programs that students and alums have led include a self-scripted choreography, a film installation inspired by amusement parks, a talk on publishing without an agent, writing workshops, and movement workshops.
Applications are now open to alumni to submit a session proposal! Sessions may be proposed on your own or with a partner, both presenters must have a Performance Studies affiliation. All sessions will be 45 minutes long and take place in one of the PS classrooms.

We are so excited to welcome our new incoming students at orientation in just a few weeks! All PS students are encouraged to submit a student profile to share a little bit about themselves to introduce their interests, areas of concentration, and any other information they would like to share with the PS community! Our student profiles are an excellent way for our community to get to know each other outside of the classroom. Use the “student profiles” link in our bio to learn about our students at PS or submit your profile as a current student!
