The youth population will grow by more than 78 million between 2021 and 2030, as per United Nations estimates, with nearly half accounted for by less economically developed countries. For the next generation of Afghan students, increasing access to is critical to help them prosper and rebuild countries and economies during/after a crisis.
Today, on World Youth Skills Day, we recognize the enormity of the challenge for education and training systems. And we continue to act as a critical resource for Afghan students and scholars by providing scholarships for them to safely pursue and complete their degrees.
The Qatar Afghan Scholarship Project (QASP) is one such program that gives Afghan refugee students the opportunity to continue their education at colleges and universities outside of Afghanistan, in partnership with multiple higher education institutions.

Announcing the 2025-2029 open grant competition for The Language Flagship’s Overseas Capstone Program!
U.S. are invited to apply for this four-year grant award to administer the capstone portion of The Language Flagship program in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian.
The capstone year is an opportunity for Flagship undergraduates to engage in language and cultural immersion. Students stay in immersive living environments, including homestays, directly enroll in local universities, and intern in their chosen field.

"My Master's journey has been novel and enriching, both inside and outside the classroom," says Popal, an Afghan refugee student enrolled in a Master's program at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
"Collaborating with classmates with diverse backgrounds, I have built my teamwork skills and network. And outside the classroom, our travels have been incredibly memorable and have expanded my worldview. My heartfelt thanks to the donors and organizers of my program here."
Popal is a recipient of the Afghan Regional Graduate Scholarship Program (ARGSP), supported by the U.S. Department of State and administered by IIE.
Through ARGSP, 35 highly motivated Afghan students are pursuing avenues to grow both within and beyond the classroom. They're exploring a world of knowledge, from business communication and economics to information technology and international trade. They're workshopping professional skills of formal presentation, communication, and learning how to apply for jobs. And they're making memories with classmates that will last them a lifetime.

On June 4-5, 2024, in collaboration with the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and George Washington University, IIE welcomed the 2024 cohort of the Iris Burton Bulls ROTC Fellowship (IBBF) Program to Washington, DC for two days of leadership development and national security programming.
Created in honor of the late Army Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Iris Burton Bulls, the IBBF Program is designed to mentor and support future military officers in their career development, build National Security Education Program alumni engagement, and provide opportunities to showcase ROTC talent within the Department of Defense.
These Fellows were joined by Army Colonel (Ret.) Herman Bulls who spoke to his late wife’s appreciation for the power of language to connect people from all walks of life. Representing 7 different Army and Air Force ROTC units, each Fellow had previously participated in the Project Global Officer (GO) Program and currently dedicates significant time to language learning for the sake of fulfilling their duty to serving US national security.

We are pleased to present the IIE Century Medal to the President of Ethiopia, Sahle-Work Zewde for her outstanding contributions to international education.
On June 15, we were honored to join her at the Addis Ababa Science and Technology University for the closing ceremony of the Presidential Mentorship Program (PMP) for university women in Ethiopia.
The program – initiated by President Zewde and funded by the Gates Foundation – provides mentorship to 1,500 3rd and 4th year female students studying at five Ethiopian universities.
As the proud implementing partner of the Presidential Mentorship Program, IIE provides enrichment, professional development, and life skills training – critical competencies needed to complete university and prepare for careers.
Edie Cecil, IIE Senior VP, IIE, and Ethiopia Tiluhan, Head, IIE Sub Sahara Office, addressed the attendees, reflecting on IIE’s long history of providing access to education around the world and its 20-year presence in Addis Ababa, which has focused primarily on supporting girls and women’s education and skills development.
We would like to acknowledge all honored guests and partners, including the FDRE Ministry of Education and IIE’s Addis Ababa team, and congratulate all the PMP students.

Afghans constitute one of the largest refugee populations worldwide, with 3.25 million internally displaced people in Afghanistan and 5.3 million abroad, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
On , we commend the strength and courage of those who have escaped conflict, and elevate their voices, their many dreams and challenges.
For young Afghan refugees, the key to their future is in their access to higher education. Yet, only 7% of refugees get the opportunity to pursue their aspirations, as per the UNHCR.
This must change. We support Afghan students and scholars by providing scholarships for them to safely pursue and complete their degrees.

Building upon IIE’s legacy as a champion of education equity, the 2024 IIE Centennial Fellowship program is focused on UN SDG 4: Quality Education. IIE believes that to increase parity in higher education, it is critical to increase equity and access to primary and secondary education creating a pipeline of opportunity.

For many Afghan refugees, access to is more than a step towards better career opportunities. It is a door to a world of safety, acceptance and belonging.
We support Afghan refugee students so they can safely pursue and complete their degrees, and contribute their voices and talent to the world.
