When Dr. Carol Greider was in elementary school, she struggled with spelling and sounding out words because of her dyslexia.

In 2009, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The Academy recognized Dr. Greider for her 1984 discovery of telomerase, an enzyme that maintains the length and integrity of chromosome ends and plays a critical role in the health and survival of all living cells and organisms.

Please don’t let anyone make you think that your child’s reading struggles are your fault. Reading to your child teaches them a lot of things but it doesn’t teach them to read!

Even the best-intended comments can make a child with dyslexia feel discouraged. Instead, focus on their strengths and talk about ways to offer support.
