It was the highlight of the festival last year and raised much needed funds for our year-round programming. It’s cake, it’s a show, it’s a fun, fabulous way to support community!

Many people—when they think about LGBTQIA+ people in the Middle Ages—guess the period was uniformly cruel, and thatChristian institutions in Western Europe were particularly intolerant. But three medieval lesbian love letters, carefully preserved by monks in a twelfth-century cathedral school textbook, show something more interesting and complex. 
 
This talk tells the history of these love letters, focusing in particular on two key moments in their preservation and transmission. First, I explore how, and why, in the later 1100s, Benedictine monks in Bavaria found them worthy of preservation and study; and second, how and why, in the early and mid-1900s a Nazi-academic succeeded for 40 years in wrongly convincing the world that the letters should be read asstraight.
 
We tend to trace LGBTQIA+ history as a path of progress, moving from a dark intolerant past to a bright accepting future. But these three letters’ medieval and modern history shows how the path is always contested, and highlights how the past is also, always, a contested battleground in contemporary movements for LGBTQIA+ rights.
