🥹😬 Here’s an example of what we DON’T teach at Scar School: Inquiring minds want to know what light ink over dark scars looks like after 4, 6, or 12 months. I personally haven’t seen successful results over this span of time, but I have seen results from people who were disappointed after trusting their artists to match their skin tone, hence the few I’ve posted. Tattooing light ink over dark scars is risky, often leading to worse outcomes, and it doesn’t make sense to apply light ink over this type of skin condition, especially if you want a natural-looking result. If you have successful case studies, please share them in my DMs; I’m gathering evidence for a documentary. 🙌🏼

Before getting inked, ask your artist these questions and request that they be realistic in their answers: Will the color make the scar darker? 🤔 Will the ink spread? Will the color change? Is it permanent? What if it worsens—what does your artist offer as a solution? Remember, tattoo artists are limited in their ability to reverse damage to the skin. Always ask to see a portfolio of before-and-after photos from similar skin types to gauge an artist’s expertise and understand what the results might look like in the long run—6, 12, 18 months, and longer. The risk of camouflaging dark scars can make them more noticeable instead of hiding them, especially in the case of raised scars. Be wary of artists promising fast solutions; a better option is a series of treatments to gradually fade dark hyperpigmentation professionally, as we teach in our Scar School Master Class. Here’s a final glitch: artists use a blend of white ink to camouflage, but removing white ink can paradoxically darken the area to a black hue due to oxidation, making it harder to erase with lasers. Make educated choices as a consumer and as an artist performing a service, and finally, remember there’s no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to dark scars.
