1️⃣ Mushroom Walks/ – Learn about the common fall mushrooms of Randall's Island on this walk which will be guided by an expert from the New York Mycological Society, NYC's mushroom club
1️⃣ ID Table/ – Learn about how to identify fungi through macro features. We will local mushrooms at the tables for you to learn.
**Please bring your own mushrooms and we will help you to identify**
1️⃣ Microscopy/ – Come hang with NYMS and zoom into nature at 40-100X magnification with microscopes. Roam on rhizomes and other samples, talk about microbes and mycelium with community scientists
1️⃣ Welcome Table & Merch/ – Get your Festival Tshirts here and info about the festival
2️⃣ NYMS/RIPA Arts & Crafts – A place where kids and adults are encouraged to create their own mushroom themed Arts and crafts. Our volunteers are there to inspire you
2️⃣ Farm Tour Whats the name of the farm, social? – Learn about the innovative urban agriculture and educational programming happening at the Randall's Island Urban Farm with an Urban Farmer and Park-as-Lab Coordinator
2️⃣ Cultivation Station –Join the NYRP Urban Ag team and Randall's Island Urban Farm crew for a hands-on oyster mushroom bag-making workshop
3️⃣ Big Reuse/ – Big Reuse brings NYC residents together to care for their own green infrastructure and empower communities to embrace composting, tree care, and reuse at a grassroots level, scalable citywide and beyond.
4️⃣ Bike Ride/ – Ride to Fungus Festival with El Barrio Bikes! Meet up at Thomas Jefferson Park in Harlem and enjoy a scenic ride along the riverfront and through the park, ending at the Festival! Free Citi Bikes will be provided thanks to our partnership with Citi Bike

1️⃣ Ifetayo Harvey – Fungus and the War on Drugs –
This interactive workshop explores the origins of the war on drugs, its ties to psilocybin, and how ending it benefits society, while also highlighting the therapeutic and cultural uses of psychedelics. Audience participation is encouraged.
2️⃣ Bruce Trigg – Mushrooms and Poisons –
This informal, story-driven lecture introduces the basics of safe mushroom consumption, the main classes of mushroom toxins with real-world examples, and common types of poisoning. With clear explanations, slides, and (hopefully) specimens for hands-on learning, we’ll also touch on new challenges like AI misidentification.

1️⃣ Aubrey Carter – Burn Mushrooms of the Northeast –
Last year, a historic drought set the conditions for fires to rage across the northeast. Join in for an observation of what mushrooms popped up in the aftermath of last fall’s forest fires.
2️⃣ Whitney Bauck and Lauren Wilson – Community Mapping the Mycelial Underground –
This talk shares our community science project to map New York’s soil fungi, from introducing local mycorrhizal communities and their importance to mobilizing neighbors to collect soil samples for DNA and heavy metal analysis. We’ll highlight insights from our first pilot dig in Brower Park, Crown Heights, in spring 2025.
3️⃣ Aishwarya Veerabahu – The Midas Mushroom: Ecology, Evolution, and Management of Invasive Golden Oyster Mushrooms –
Golden oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) are now common edible “neighbors” in our landscapes—but how do they affect local fungi? This talk traces their origin, ecological impacts, and future research into their evolution and management.

Exploring fungi beyond their fruiting bodies, tracing the history and future of mycorrhizal cultivation—from French truffières to Chinese morel farms—and their vital role in agriculture, organic farming, and emerging research on ecological mimicry.
2️⃣ Lorraine Cruz – Living in a Plastisphere –
“Living in a Plastisphere” explores how microbial communities—fungi and bacteria working together to metabolize synthetic plastics—reveal both the ecological impact of plastic and new possibilities for rethinking waste, single-use manufacturing, and extractive production.
3️⃣ Hector Prudhomme – Rooting the Future: Mycorrhizal Fungi, Farming, and Climate Change–
This talk introduces the two main types of mycorrhizal fungi—arbuscular and ectomycorrhizal—and their critical roles in plant nutrition, forest and crop resilience, and carbon sequestration. Highlighting key scientific discoveries, it concludes with a walkthrough of SPUN’s new Underground Atlas, which maps global mycorrhizal biodiversity hotspots and underscores the urgent need to protect these hidden ecosystems.
