As a mridangam student in Karraikudi Mani Sir’s lineage, I want to share one of my favorite lessons on his birthday. 8-beat cycle (Adi Talam) and subdivided in 5 (Khanda Naddai). Composition by Karraikudi Mani Sir. I’m grateful to my teacher Sai Shiv Lakshmi Keshav who shows me the truth and beauty of this music tradition every week. I’m not the same composer since I started learning Carnatic music. I credit my teacher, and friends from my Carnatic music community, for showing me a whole different way to hear each other’s music and to love my profession more.
