"RUBY/DAKOTA is excited to announce Home is You, Right Now, a debut group exhibition of multi-disciplinary and multi-generational 21st century artists in conjunction with its opening day.

Inspired by the gallerist’s inner journey home – objectified as the image of an empty house – this collection of artworks speak to the double-sided nature of our conscious and unconscious drives that pull us toward homecoming, the body’s impulse to replay the past over and over, and the murky temporal space we all inhabit between childhood and adulthood."

NYSS invites artists to join an upcoming Marathon in New York City or virtually from anywhere in the world.

Marathons present a wide range of immersive art-making strategies, in tandem with the philosophical inspiration of group critiques and personalized feedback of instructors. The innovation, rigor, and depth of these 10-day programs expand each participant’s engagement with drawing and sculpture. All courses are led in real-time with faculty members present, ensuring meaningful dialogue and ample one-on-one feedback throughout the duration of the program. Congratulations to Alum Carlo D’Anselmi (MFA 2015) on his current exhibition at This Weekend Room!

Repost from

Very excited to have several drawings and paintings included in the 3 person show “Oscillate Sequence” opening TOMORROW, July 12th at in Seoul 🇰🇷 South Korea.

“Oscillate Sequence” includes work by myself, Maxim Brandt and Shinyoung Park

ThisWeekendRoom wrote the following beautiful paragraph about my work:

“Carlo D’Anselmi depicts lovers under the light of nature and city night, as well as the flowers, birds, cats and trees that fill their surroundings. His paintings echo the footsteps of predecessors like Paul Gauguin and Henri Rousseau, who painted with a primal energy. His paintings feature warm exchanges of gaze, varied materials, and a rhythm of bold strokes and shimmering colors. Ordinary acts, such as lying down, reading a book, or making eye contact, combined with the intensity of the light falling on the body, the various shapes of shadows, and the abstract patterns interspersed throughout suggest a mysterious dreamlike story. The subtle facial expressions of figures with closed eyes, still and aware of the air, smells, light and temperature, evoke a myriad of emotions that language cannot fully describe yet clearly exist. In particular, the fundamental sense of love and solidarity that has motivated humanity to create for centuries a dynamic source of thought in his work.”

The show is on view until August 17 🌸

“The residency has felt like a soft launch of how I might continue my practice in a ‘real-world’ setting, juggling making ends meet with the true joy and passion of my life. I am grateful for this chance to continue parsing out what I want out of my work, my community, and myself.” - Char Healey (MFA 2023), NYSS DUMBO Artist-in-Residence

Read more about Char's experience in the NYSS DUMBO Residency via the Journal link in bio!

About the Residency
The DUMBO studio space, extended to NYSS by David Walentas / Two Trees Management, is intended to foster artistic and professional independence during NYSS alumni’s transitions from full-time student to practicing artist. Each year, one to three artists from recent graduating classes are selected through a juried process for the DUMBO Artist Residency, which provides ample studio spaces and exhibition opportunities for one year.

Congratulations to MFA Candidate Zana Naveed on her feature in Hyperallergic's A View From the Easel!

"It is nice engaging with the NYC community that is around while I am drawing. Typically women and kids stop by to comment. I still feel weird about having opinions on other people’s art, so it’s weirdly cathartic to encourage other people to speak up and specifically say what they want to about the drawing after their initial “I don’t know anything about art or anything, but you know…” Sometimes there will be constructive feedback that is quite insightful! I am also a student at the and the community there is definitely where I got my inspiration to start drawing outside." - Zana Naveed

Final week to see Eyal Danieli: A Man of Parts, the first survey of the late artist’s work, curated by Robert Storr, on view through this Sunday, July 14!

“He was an uncommonly brilliant thinker about the most vexed questions of cultural identity that have dominated art criticism and artistic creation in recent years, as well as a painter and draftsman wholly and unapologetically committed to his vocation.” - Robert Storr

The exhibition highlights Danieli’s explorations of a series of motifs over three decades, featuring works in oil paint; drawings in ink, charcoal, and conte crayon; and prints, including monotypes, etchings, and linoleum cuts. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, June 6 from 6 to 8pm.

Eyal Danieli was born in Pittsburgh in 1961 and spent the next seven years in the United States and Canada. He came of age and was educated in Israel, where he completed his required military service in the Israel Defence Forces before embarking on his artistic training at Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design. Danieli chose to leave Israel and make his life in New York City, where he continued his art education at the New York Studio School.

Gallery hours: 10am-6pm, daily.

Congratulations to Alum and Instructor Ilse Sørensen Murdock on her upcoming two-person exhibition with artist Ash Ferlito "Yellow Night," at The Barn Project , on view from July 6 - August 4, 2024!

"The Barn Project is pleased to present Yellow Night, its inaugural exhibition by Ash Ferlito and Ilse Sørensen Murdock. Ferlito and Murdock, who first met in Skowhegan, Maine, at the artist residency, share a devotion to color, light and the natural world. The two worked side-by-side in each others’ studio every Wednesday night for nearly three years, cut short only by the pandemic, encouraging and egging each other on to dive directly toward what matters most to them, eschewing irony and covert strategies to embrace increasingly direct ways of representing concerns for and connections to nature." - The Barn Project

NYSS mourns the loss of artist and close friend of the School, June Leaf. In commemoration of her lasting influence, please enjoy this clip from our 2021 lecture series with Steven Harvey entitled “What We Remember,” recorded on November 2.

“I was invited to make a sculpture at Lippincott Foundry, and this is part of that period. I did end up making a head of a woman with mechanics inside the head. You would crank it and in her mind things would go round and actually her tongue makes a noise. “Click click click”. And air that bellows in her chest. See, there is a bellows in the chest and you turn the crank and it blows air out of her mouth and inside her head it is a magnetic lever like the bell of a bicycle. I opened up the bell of a bicycle and I saw the mechanics inside.” - June Leaf

Please join us in honoring and celebrating Graham Nickson as he transitions to Dean Emeritus of New York Studio School.

In a message to the NYSS community, Board President F. Anthony Zunino shared, “The Board of Trustees gratefully recognizes the power of Graham’s transformational leadership. His vision—as an artist, as a teacher, as a leader—has had a profound impact on thousands of students who have found their path as lifelong artists. Under his leadership, New York Studio School has become an important cultural and educational center, with a community that extends far beyond New York City.”

The British-born artist, who came to New York in 1976, built the New York Studio School into a vital center for the in-depth study of painting, drawing, and sculpture. Nickson created the now internationally recognized Drawing Marathon, an intensive, two-week course of study that has become the signature program of the School—grounded in drawing from perception and emblematic of the Studio School’s pedagogical rigor. He established the MFA program in 2004 and most recently led a newly created Virtual Certificate Program, which graduated its inaugural cohort this year.

Associate Dean Kaitlin McDonough, who has been with the School on both faculty and staff since 2014, will serve as Acting Head of School and the Board of Trustees will form a search committee to find the School’s next Dean.

New York Studio School will host its Annual Benefit on Thursday, October 24. A special exhibition of Graham’s paintings and watercolors will open the same day, including new work and work drawn from the William Louis-Dreyfus Collection. We hope you will join us to celebrate the School’s 60th anniversary and Graham’s extraordinary legacy.

“My experience at this New York Studio School Marathon has greatly influenced my approach to painting. As a figurative artist concerned with the power of story, I attended the Marathon hoping to discover a new way to arrive at narrative. Interestingly, I discovered this 'new' approach through studying ancient art. The work my cohort and I created during the Marathon demonstrated the power of employing the compositional structure of historical works of art to create new and original work.” - Rebekah Stoneberg on the Painting Marathon: Pompeii, Harmonics and Mystery

The school mourns the passing of Martica Sawin, a cherished friend for many years. Martica Sawin, an art historian noted for her groundbreaking scholarship on the European Surrealist refugees who came to New York City during World War II, died at her home in Portland, Maine on June 8.

Sawin lectured at the Studio School on numerous occasions, most recently as part of a panel discussing Leland Bell, with Simon Carr, Paul Resika, Stanley Lewis, Bruce Gagnier, and Steven Harvey.

Sawin’s book "Surrealism in Exile and the Beginning of the New York School" brought a new understanding to the origins and evolution of abstract expressionism. Her scholarship included exclusive first-hand accounts and interviews with European artist refugees fleeing fascism, revealing for the first time their huge impact on the course of American art.

Over Sawin’s long life, her intellect never failed her, and in her final days, she shared her reflections and deep appreciation of her rich and full life in calls and visits from friends. She was surrounded by the paintings that she loved, to which she would refer as her “great friends.”

Clip: Martica Sawin “Leland Bell: A Panel Discussion” September 28, 2022.

“In 1950 the Museum of Modern Art had its first big show of abstract painting and sculpture in America. Up to that time, you couldn’t see that much abstract art in the United States. And for many people that became the goal, that’s where you had to be. Or there were those who still, in their studio practice and in their classes and so forth, drawing the model and working from life and so on. So, it was a number of younger artists who were attempting to find a way to resolve or find a bridge between abstraction and representation and some of them were the best artists of that time and interesting and vital work emerged.”
