"Alone, Together" opens tonight, Thursday, April 3rd! Opening Reception from 6 to 8PM at 20 Jay Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 Suite 307
On View April 3 - April 21, 2025
This exhibit features new work by 2024-25 NYSS Residency artist Catherine Bickford (CERT 2024). An exploration of belonging, Bickford examines the paradox of our solitary journey through life. We are pack animals, yet we come into and leave the world completely alone. This conundrum provides the framework for this body of work which looks deeply at our need for connection in a world that inherently promises none.
Open studios by Sarah Valerie and Narelle Sissons

New York Studio School is pleased to present the work of our Certificate graduates in two exhibitions, the first of which features work by graduates Alecia Chenoa & Jane Schube.
The exhibition will run from Thursday, April 10 - Saturday, April 19
Join us for the opening Reception Thursday, April 10th at 6PM!
Alecia Chenoa:
My work draws inspiration from Old Master paintings, Greek and Roman mythology, and contemporary artists. I reinterpret the symbolism found in these historical works, reshaping it through a modern lens to reflect my experience as a woman in the 21st century. By reordering traditional narratives and iconography, I seek to create a visual language that bridges the past and present, offering new perspectives on timeless themes.
Alecia Chenoa, "Still Life in Pinks and Greens,"
Jane Schube:
Painting takes me into a zone that connects me to myself and the world, especially, plein air painting which challenges me to capture the moment.
I am grateful for every opportunity to create; it often brings me moments of peace and joy in a crazy world.

This Thursday, April 4th at 6:30PM join us for THE FEMALE GAZE, a group exhibition featuring female-identifying artists AJ Lim (NYSS MFA ‘26), Alex Maceda (NYSS MFA ‘26), Holly Overton (NYSS MFA ‘26).
Via their paintings and drawings, the artists explore and challenge traditional art historical – often cis-male – perspectives and tropes, from desire and the n**e, to strength via work and the use of the hands. Drawn primarily from personal experiences, the work examines power dynamics – artist and model, viewer and subject, female and male – and questions what it means to reinforce, subvert, and ultimately define ‘the female gaze.’
Work shown in post:
Holly Overton, ‘INSTALL WEEK’
AJ Lim, ‘DRAWING FROM BELOW’
Alex Maceda, ‘AFTERNOON IN BROOKLYN’

Tomorrow, Tuesday April 1st, we have Candida Alvarez and Allison Glenn for our Evening Lecture Series at 6:30PM.
Allison Glenn is a New York-based curator and writer focusing on the intersection of art and public space, through public art and special projects, biennials, and major new commissions by a wide range of contemporary artists.
Candida Alvarez is an artist whose primary materials are painting and drawing. Her abstractions are composed from a personal narrative that is captured through mobile photography. Beginning with a collage-like exchange, Alvarez creates a space that eventually unfolds into drawings, resulting in several layers overlapping. The works evolve through an intuitive process where color becomes the pictorial architect between shape and line. Abstraction becomes a sense of wonder that tracks the formal play and lives within Alvarez’s compositions.
Our lectures are always free and open to the public!

Carla Forbes: “[Nancy Elizabeth] Prophet goes to Atlanta, as Catherine mentioned, and starts teaching for about ten years at Atlanta University and Spellman [College] teaching modeling courses and being a very active and engaged teacher, as we see in this slide here.”
Catherine Morris: “This is a small piece of a film that was made about the program in 1937. One of the things that I am sure you picked up on and which is amazing about prophet is how what a stunning sort of character she was and how incredibly chic. Another image of her in the studio and on the right we have her tools, and one of the things that is very important in Prophet’s work was that she was unable to hire assistants, so unlike most of her peers, she did all of her carving her self. And she also adapted these tools that she spent quite a bit of money on getting the best tools possible, to her specific needs and the way that she sculpted. These were discovered only in the last few years in somebody’s garage in Rhode Island and we are very happy to have them in the exhibition. One of the things she said about carving was that she said, ‘I feel so in contact with myself in that work.’”

Marathon Alert! Here are the dates, teachers and titles of our 1st of 3 Summer Marathon Sessions!
Summer Marathons (Summer Session) are held each year during the months of June and July in three intensive two-week long sessions. Classes are limited in size to ensure meaningful faculty interaction and in-depth dialogue amongst participants. The innovation and rigor inherent in these 10-day programs expand participants’ engagement with their materials of choice and lead to ways of creating which continue far beyond each program’s conclusion. Open to artists of all levels, courses are taught daily in-person or virtually in real-time from 9am – 6pm ET, excluding weekends.
Apply through our website or in the link in the bio! We hope to see you this summer.

Last chance to sign up for our Upcoming Marathon: Drawing from life – Outside and Inside the Picture Plane with Silas Borsos, Thursday, March 20 – Monday, March 24, 2025.
"This Marathon will help each student find their own specific approach to drawing. Where one person may build a drawing slowly with a light touch, another may use darker faster marks; where one person may be fascinated by perceptual drawing, another may be attracted to using photographs - the purpose of this course is to build on the students’ respective impulses and distill their thinking into "pictorial’’ terms. I am excited to see how the individuals' interests come through."

This past Friday .art and .art debuted their new duo exhibition BEGINNINGS at the New York Studio School! The show will be on view until April 3rd.
"Entering is a duo exhibition featuring Marie-Chloé Duval and Merewyn Wirth, exploring the act of stepping into spaces—both physical and psychological. Through painting, sculpture, and installation, the artists investigate how we enter not only rooms and landscapes but also new realities, memories, and states of being.
Marie-Chloé Duval’s work captures the tension between movement and stillness, abstraction and figuration, reflecting on the complexities of human connection and societal structures. Her layered compositions evoke the fleeting nature of perception, inviting viewers to navigate the blurred boundaries between the known and the unknown.
Merewyn Wirth’s practice engages with spatial perception and materiality, using geometric forms and architectural references to examine how we inhabit and define space. Through a minimalist yet tactile approach, her works create portals that alter our awareness of movement, presence, and transition.
Together, Duval and Wirth construct an immersive dialogue that challenges the viewer’s relationship with space—both external and internal. Entering is an invitation to reflect on thresholds, transformations, and the way we move through life, offering an experience that is both visceral and contemplative."

Tonight, March 14th - .art and .art debut their new duo exhibition BEGINNINGS at the New York Studio School!
Swing by at 6PM for the opening.
Featured work: Marie-Chloé Duval's "The Field of Flowers was Inside of Me" and Merewyn Wirth's "Untitled"

“So many of these paintings, like “Double Bed” and you’ll see a number of paintings later on, they come from things I wanted to do 25 years ago, 30 years ago, 40 years ago but could’t do. But of course I could do them but I didn’t give myself permission to do them. Why is that? Was it because I was a girl? Maybe a little, maybe is it because I didn’t think much of myself? Maybe a little. But finally when I gave myself permission to go to the immense trouble making, essentially, installations to paint from, it kind of like —you know the flood gates opened. That meant that anything I dreamt, anything I thought of was a possibility. And it was— I am so struck so often with students when I go into their studios and I say “So why did you decide that the wall should be white?” And they say, “It was white”. And I know what they are going through because — and there is a school of thought in photography that says, if you are going to take a photograph its got to be what’s in front of you and then there is the photographs that people set up. And finally, I decided to think of everything in the vernacular of still life. So if you can set up bottles and a plate, you can park a car everyday in the place you want to park the car. Later on, you can build what you need to do, you can figure it out.” — Catherine Murphy
