Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez to make history in all-teen US Open final 09/10/2021

Two teen Mighty Girls will meet in the US Open final tomorrow in the first women's or men's major tennis final featuring unseeded players since the Open Era began in 1968! 18-year-old Emma Raducanu of Britain and 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez of Canada both came into the Grand Slam tournament as unseeded players, ranked 150th and 73rd in the world respectively. Though each were expected to be eliminated early in the tournament, the pair will now go head-to-head in the first major final between two teens since Serena Williams played Martina Hingis at the 1999 US Open. Raducanu is also the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Maria Sharapova won at Wimbledon in 2004. Although her plane ticket had a return date for right after the qualifiers were over, Raducanu marvels "three weeks later, I'm in the final and I can't believe it.” Fernandez was equally thrilled by her stunning, unexpected success: "I'm glad that whatever I'm doing on court, the fans are loving it -- and I'm loving it, too. We’ll say it’s magical."

Congratulations to both Emma and Leylah and best of luck to both at tomorrow's final!

Annie Oakley, the famed American sharpshooter and star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, was born on this day in 1860. Oakley was born in a log cabin in rural Ohio and began shooting and hunting at age eight to collect wild game to help support her widowed mother and siblings.

From a young age she performed shooting acts at circuses and shows and, over time, Oakley became one of the first global superstars renowned worldwide for her incredible skill. One of her most famous feats was splitting a playing card, edge-on, and filling it with holes before it hit the ground at 90 feet using a .22-caliber rifle.

Oakley championed women's right to education, as well as taught an estimated 15,000 women how to shoot for purposes of hunting, exercise and recreation. As she once said, "God intended women to be outside as well as men, and they do not know what they are missing when they stay cooped up in the house.”

For an excellent biography to introduce children to this remarkable trailblazer, we highly recommend "Who Was Annie Oakley?" for ages 8 to 12 at https://www.amightygirl.com/who-was-annie-oakley

Little Leaping Leaders Featured Leader (May, 2021): Dr. Rachna Sultanian

Dr. Rachna Sultanian is an Emergency (E.R.) Medicine Specialist in Bronx, N.Y. and is affiliated with Bronx Care Hospital Center. Dr. Sultanian went to college at Binghamton University and SUNY Upstate Medical School. She has published several medical papers, received the Resident of the Year Award, and has been Vice Chair of ACEP (The American College of Emergency Physicians).

Rachna was born in India and has lived in Arizona, the Midwest, upstate New York, and New York City. The drive to make peoples’ lives better led Rachna to being a physician in the Emergency Room, commonly called the E.R. In the E.R., Rachna takes care of emergencies from a heart attack or a stroke to a stubbed toe. In such a stressful environment, Rachna keeps in mind that she does not know what other people are going through, so even if they might seem mean, she is still patient and kind.

Our Leaping Leaders learned what scenarios are considered an emergency and what to do in each situation. Additionally, our leaders learned that even though something may not go their way today, in the end it all works out for the best. So stay positive and keep working hard. We had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Rachna Sultanian as our Featured Leader for May! Thank you for supporting LLL, Dr. Sultanian!

Here are some fun facts about Rachna:
1. Favorite movie: Shawshank Redemption
2. Favorite sport: Volleyball
3. Favorite quote: Someone once asked, “What’s the definition of anger?” A wise man answered, “Anger is a way you punish yourself for someone else’s mistake.”
4. Virtue most important to her: Spread happiness and be kind.
5. Favorite food: Indian food

Our very first Featured Leader, Sadaf Jaffer for Assembly, runs for Trenton, NJ!

Thank you for supporting LLL. We wish you success in all your endeavors and request for all to go out and support this fierce leader! Good luck, Sadaf Jaffer!

I am a scholar, a mother, and a community leader. In 2017, I ran for local office because I believe that good government can change people’s lives. In 2019, I became Mayor to bring much-needed change to my town of Montgomery. Now, I am running for Assembly to bring that drive for change to state government. The - Andrew Zwicker for Senate, Roy Freiman for Assembly and myself - are the perfect ticket to bring experienced, representative governance to Trenton.
