Through the Ellen Schall Experience Fund, a stipend awarded to a select group of students working in unpaid summer internships, Jiayi Liu (MPA 2025) spent the summer interning with UA3, assisting at their Lower East Side Community First Food Pantry, as well as leading nutrition workshops for local students.

Liu notes that, in engaging with members of the community through this experience, her perspective of public service has deepened. "This experience made me consider how we can optimize existing services to benefit more people. Improving service quality also means reducing information gaps and enhancing accessibility, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly and non-native English speakers,” she said.

Ingrid Gould Ellen, the Paulette Goddard Professor of Urban Policy and Planning and the director for the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, was quoted in an article for USA TODAY, discussing a Furman Center study that found that nearly half of the households receiving Section 8 housing vouchers were not able to use them.

Voucher program is supposed to help poor families rent a home. Nearly half the time, it fails. Nearly half of people who receive federal housing vouchers are unable to use them. "It's a dire situation," one researcher said.

For their Capstone Project, students Ritwick Dutta, Leon Wang, and Narihiro Tanaka were tasked by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) to conduct a study of South Tangerang Regency, Indonesia, to explore the successes and challenges of municipal administrations in financing sustainable development initiatives. The UNCDF is a UN agency that aims to promote economic growth at the local level, particularly in the world's least developed nations. Through background interviews, a literature review, and on-site interviews in Jakarta and South Tangerang, the Wagner team produced a case study that includes analysis and financial recommendations for local governments in the region, which will appear in a UNCDF report and as a presentation for future UNCDF meetings.

The findings, which also explored the political makeup of the counties most impacted by climate disasters, were referenced in an Associate Press article, discussing the increase in extreme weather events in inland counties and the subsequent impact on need for federal aid.
