Just because your child is upset, doesn’t mean you should be upset. Model ‘calm’ when upset happens!
Wings to Fly, Inc.
We are here to empower parents/guardians of students who learn differently, to be more effective in managing behavior and teaching their children.
When your child is upset and/or tantrumming, it’s time for you to be calm. Give simple directions and keep them safe. Be persistent but not angry. If you need to wait a bit before you can proceed, try to keep the child in a small area. This is not a good time to cuddle and tickle. The goal is still for the child to do what was asked.
Why did No become a bad word? Because it was associated with anger and punishment? But it does not have to be that way. No is an important word to keep children safe and functional. That is showing love.

To discipline children you must first discipline yourself.
I was a mom who had to sit at the kitchen table to help my son with homework, every evening, often into the night. I never did his homework for him though. I taught him how to do it.
A child is fortunate to have a parent who strives to be a lifelong learner.

My suggestions take disciplining yourself, before you can discipline your child. Why do you think that is necessary?
To parents of students who are struggling in school.......Do you know why studying for the test the day before does not help your child to pass the test? Essentially, studying this way will have little effect on their overall school success. Let’s talk.
It is better if your child sheds some tears now, than doing so as an adult. For your young child, learning to do things differently is frustrating and difficult, but it may be necessary for his future to be stable and productive. My boss summed it up in this way, “ Do the greater kindness”. That has helped me stay focused on what is important.
