PSAT 2020: THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE!

Every fall, sophomores and juniors have the opportunity to take the PSAT, which can allow you to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. However, you must register for the PSAT through your high school, and, because of COVID-19, not all high schools are offering the PSAT this year. Because of this, we have compiled a quick guide to help you navigate the National Merit Scholarship qualification process:

1) Determine whether your school will offer the PSAT using the College Board's school search tool (https://ordering.collegeboard.org/testordering/publicSearch). If your school will not be offering the PSAT or you are homeschooled, you can instead search for your city, state, and zip code to see which schools around you will be offering the test.

2) Find out your PSAT registration deadline and test date using the school search tool. Most schools choose to administer the exam on the primary test date (tentatively Wednesday, October 14th, 2020).

3) Sign up and pay for the PSAT. This part may be tricky, as PSAT sign-up methods vary from school to school. Because of this, we recommend that you call the school that you would like to take the test in or contact one of its counselors to find out about the registration process. The PSAT costs $17 per student, but some schools may subsidize all or part of this fee.

4) If you do not want or are not able to take the PSAT, there is an alternative this year: you may instead use your SAT score to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. To do this, you must simply take an official administration of the SAT given between October 2020 and June 2021 and request that the College Board sends an official report of your SAT scores to NMSC (code 0085). You must also complete the "Alternate Entry Form to NMSC," which is posted to their website.

Here at Sagittarius Prep, we would love to help you prepare for these exams, and encourage you to register for our free no-commitment trial session on our website (https://sagittariusprep.com/)! However, whether you choose to join our community or wish to prepare for the test on your own, the Sagittarius Prep team wishes you the best of luck!

As a result of current events, many colleges are shifting to test-optional admissions, meaning it is not mandatory to submit SAT or ACT scores as part of your application. This leaves students with a deeply personal strategy decision to make: "Is this an opportunity to demonstrate my competitive edge with a strong score or join others in not dealing with the test at all?"

If you choose to try the test, there are many ways to prepare. Studying by yourself is certainly one of these options and there are many resources available for you to help, such as the NYPL (please explore links below). You can also work with a tutor and Sagittarius Prep is happy to partner with you, as well as offer a free Trial Session and a $200 Promotion.
