Meet our guest speaker for Friday’s event, Professor Sophie Gibert. Professor Gibert is currently a Bersoff Faculty Fellow at NYU and will be an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania next year. She received a Ph.D. in philosophy from MIT. Her research is in ethics, the philosophy of action, and bioethics. She is especially interested in questions about how we can permissibly influence other people’s behavior and where our rights against other people’s influence come from.

Alongside her research, she has done a variety of work in ethics pedagogy for STEM students. Most recently, she was an Ethics Pedagogy Fellow at Harvard’s Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics and a SERC Scholar at MIT’s College of Computing. Previously, she served as co-director of the Experiential Ethics program at MIT and was a graduate teaching fellow for the Embedded EthiCS program at Harvard.

Before graduate school, she was a pre-doctoral fellow in the Clinical Center Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health and completed her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College in philosophy and biology.
