⚠️ DID YOU KNOW? A RADIOACTIVE SUPERFUND SITE SITS RIGHT ON THE BUSHWICK–RIDGEWOOD BORDER.

The former Wolff-Alport Chemical Company, located along Irving and Cooper Avenues, processed monazite sand containing radioactive thorium from the 1920s until 1954. For years, radioactive waste was discharged into the sewer system and may also have been buried on the property. (Cumulis)

The contamination affected buildings, soil, sidewalks, streets and portions of the sewer system. The EPA placed Wolff-Alport on the Superfund National Priorities List in 2014, and cleanup work remains ongoing. (Cumulis)

For families in CEC District 32 and the greater Bushwick community, environmental safety is an education issue. Our children deserve safe schools, safe streets, clean air and healthy neighborhoods.

CEC 32 believes our community deserves information, transparency and a voice as this cleanup continues.

🙏🏾 BUSHWICK STANDS TOGETHER

Community is about showing up for one another when it matters most.

We are grateful to see a Harlem church extending support to South Bushwick Church as the congregation works to rebuild following the devastating fire that struck its historic Bushwick Avenue home on June 19. The more than 170-year-old landmark has long been part of the fabric of our neighborhood—serving generations through worship, food assistance, youth programming, outreach, and community care. As highlighted by 1010 WINS, this act of generosity reminds us that when one community is hurting, neighbors from across New York can come together to help.

CEC District 32 stands with the South Bushwick Church community and all of our Bushwick families as recovery and rebuilding continue. 💙

CEC District 32 is sharing several opportunities to help families get ready for the 2026–27 school year! From FREE backpacks and school supplies to community resources, food, music, games and family activities, there are events happening throughout Bushwick and nearby communities this August.
