Weekend of conferences. Conference #1 lets gooooo
My name is Brandie E. Waid (pronouns: she/her/ella) and I am an independent math coach/consultant and scholar based in Northern New Jersey.
As a math coach/consultant, I work with districts, schools, universities, departments, organizations, and individual teachers to implement teaching practices and curriculum that honors the humanity each student brings to their mathematics learning. My work is heavily influenced by my life experiences as a q***r, second generation Cuban American from a conservative Catholic upbringing. Like Autumn

This book is a must read for anyone wanting to understand the experience of trans athletes, and specifically Black trans athletes. CeCé’s story made me angry, it made me sad, but she also gave me hope and reminded me why we fight.
ID: text that reads “I’ve been in headlines across the United States and across the world, I’ve been named personally in anti-trans legislation. I’ve been honored by top LGBTQ organizations, I’ve been painted as a hero, as a villain, as a symbol, as a representative for an issue that has taken center stage in the culture wars. But when people are busy turning you into a symbol, they forget what you really are: a human being. A person with needs and desires, fears and hopes just like everyone else. At the end of the day, I’m just a girl with a dream. A girl with so much love in her heart. And all I want, all I’ve ever wanted, is the freedom to run.”

New article is out - What Counts as Mathematical Proof and Proving? Redesigning a Teacher Preparation Content Course to Illustrate Liberatory Pedagogies in Action
I’m so proud of the work my two former students Saul Pastora and Syd Stowe put into this over the last two years. It’s been an honor to write with them and appreciate the patience, care, and grace that David Bowers, Alexander S. Moore, & our awesome open reviewer Rani Satyam as we navigated large transitions in all of our (the authors) lives, while simultaneously trying to get this out in the world.

Throughout the month of October we’re fundraising for Camp for STEM Q***ries, a program sponsored and created by QMT! We need about 43k to run camp and to keep it COMPLETERLY FREE for the students. We may not reach that goal, but anything you can give helps. Even $5!
Check out my awkward video to learn more and donate at this link: https://bit.ly/CampSTEMQ***riesDonate.
PS - we’re moving to rename camp from Camp of Mathematical Q***ries to Camp of STEM Q***ries, simply because it more accurately captures the interdisciplinary nature of camp.
PPS- since we’re crowdfunding through a university platform, rather than go fund me or a similar platform, we get to keep every dollar donated for camp operations!

The Q***r Mathematics Teacher, Radical Pedagogy Institute, & Teach about Women are thrilled to launch a 4th summer of “Camp” of Mathematical Q***ries!
This exciting initiative is a FREE virtual enrichment program tailored to 2SLGBTQIA+ teens (grades 9-12). It provides students with a space to grow and learn skills that will serve them both in & outside of the classroom, & to connect with 2SLGBTQIA+ peers and mentors.
This summer we will be focusing on the mathematics of gerrymandering, which is a way politicians redraw voting districts to weaken or strengthen the power of specific communities, including q***r and trans communities.

This year’s program is supported by HRT Foundation and Mathematics Association of America.

Two book chapters I coauthored coming your way at the end of the month, both in Kia Darling-Hammond and Bre Evans-Santiago’s edited book "T* is for Thriving: Blueprints for Affirming Trans* and Gender Creative Lives and Learning in Schools."
The first chapter, coauthored with the amazing Tyrone Martinez Black, is titled “2SLGBTQIA+ Community Centers: A Beacon of Hope” and is a high school geometry lesson focused on assets within the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community Centers as community assets.
The second, coauthored with the also amazing Cathery Yeh, El Chen, and Kia Darling-Hammond, is titled “Yassifying Math with “The Hips of the Drag Queen”
By El Chen” and is a K-1 math lesson focused on counting

About the book:
T* Is for Thriving offers collected wisdom from educators and community members about meeting trans* and gender creative (T*GC) students™ needs in schools. In it, the editors, Kia Darling-Hammond and Bre Evans-Santiago, have combined lesson plans that offer models for inclusive instruction with stories that amplify community guidance about how to be responsive, affirming, and celebratory. In this time of struggle for basic T*GC human and civil rights, this book makes it easier for educators to be, as they historically have been, champions of justice”building the schools, communities, and world we dream of. T* Is for Thriving is essential reading for anyone involved in defending the rights of educators and students. It is the perfect text for courses in teacher education, as well as those focused on social justice, LGBTQ+ topics, and critical pedagogy.

As I wrote in the chapter, “I will never inherently inherently understand what it means to practice antiracism in mathematics or beyond precisely because I am not Black or Afro-Latinx. I can, however, work towards-recognizing that I will never fully achieve- an antiracist q***r and trans pedagogy by looking to Black scholars, particularly q***r and trans Black or Afro-Latinx scholars with expertise in antiracist q***r and trans pedagogy. For this reason, I rely on the work and words of q***r and trans Black scholars to inform my discussion and practice of an antiracist pedagogy throughout this chapter. They are the experts, and while this chapter presents my interpretation of their scholarship and activism, I urge you to read their work to inform your own practice of enacting antiracist q***r and trans pedagogy.”
Scholars and activists to begin with (discussed in the chapter):
-Bettina Love
-Shamari Reid
- Ed Brockenbrough
-Crystal LaBeija (activist, House mother)
Add Black Q***r and Trans scholars to read and learn from, as well as q***r and trans activists to learn about/from in the comments.
