No one talks about this enough: when a bow technique isn’t working, the issue is often not the passage itself but the way we are holding and using the bow.

It is essential to re-evaluate not only the overall bow hold, but also the role of each individual finger within that specific technique. Each finger has a distinct function, and when one element is misaligned, it can disrupt the entire system.

One of the most common issues we observe is the thumb- either collapsing outward or pressing too firmly into the stick. This creates unnecessary tension and effectively locks the natural flexibility of the bow arm, limiting both control and sound production.

While every hand is different, the positioning and behavior of the thumb play a critical role. A balanced, responsive thumb allows the hand to remain flexible and connected, ultimately leading to greater ease, control, and a more resonant sound.

Your hand position should be set so that you can comfortably reach every part of the fingerboard within a given position. Regardless of the passage, the hand must remain balanced, flexible, and constantly prepared to access any note without unnecessary tension or last-minute adjustments.

Rather than reacting note by note, think of the hand as already “placed” for the entire shape of the passage. This sense of readiness allows for greater stability, cleaner shifts, and more reliable intonation.

In this case, a subtle adjustments of the arm are equally important. The arm should guide the hand’s placement, ensuring that each finger falls naturally onto the string without stretching or collapsing. When the arm, hand, and fingers are aligned, the technique becomes far more efficient and the musical result far more secure.
