๐ VR in Learning ๐๐
Last week, the Stanford Accelerator for Learning held a panel discussion on the state of the AI and VR industry.
The panel was organized by our own founder, Alex Stolyarik, who moderated this event, ๐ฅ featuring industry leaders from Meta, Roblox, Inworld, Virbela, Roblox, Shapes XR, and Flow Immersive.
Kiran Bhat, Senior Director Of Engineering at Roblox, a veteran in the AI sector and a recipient of the Sci-Fi Hollywood Award, elaborated on the educational potential of VR platforms like Roblox, where immersive 3D experiences can significantly enhance learning engagement and effectiveness driven by Generative AI technologies.
AI-powered VR platforms have the potential to revolutionize education by offering immersive and engaging learning experiences that traditional methods cannot. They enable experiential learning where students can interact with complex subjects via prompts and hands-on experimentation, which can lead to better understanding and retention of information. Moreover, VR's capacity to simulate various environments allows for safe, productive failure, which is essential for development and growth.

A new in-VR genetics course, designed by Stanford PhD students for 8-9th graders, is offered by UniVirtual Academy. It is a unique opportunity for students to explore the basic principles of heredity, genetic mutations, and the structure and function of DNA and do it all in a collaborative immersive environment with other students and teachers. Pease, watch this video from the creator of the class, Marcos Rojas: https://youtu.be/sMXgIZDdytM. Parents can sign up their kids at https://univirtual.academy/camps/genetics-level-1

In my view, VR equipment will reach the mass market in 2024. Last month, VR hardware sales had another strong holiday season and are gearing up for another strong year ahead. There are indications that Meta Quest 2 sold 2M units this holiday season and Meta Quest was the most downloaded app in both iOS and Android app on Christmas. In many stores, Quest 2 was sold out and online retailers, like Amazon had to limit the number of units one can buy.

"Learning is often a social activity that is undertaken with a cohort of people with similar interests, goals, and in collaborative activities," by Martin Weller. With homeschooling and online schooling on the rise, it is important for parents and educators not to forget the social aspect of education. It also makes education more fun.
